Blu-ray: Do Consumers Care?
(Bits/New York Times blog)
-
[T]he ultimate success of Blu-ray depends [on]...whether most people can even see the difference between a high-definition DVD image and a standard definition one.My view: I don't think most, people would notice, but first, give us content that's worth watching. Sports in HD is awesome, but current technology is sharp enough. A lot of folks already made a huge investment in new HDTV monitors and equipment. Now they're saying it's still not enough. A few more lines of resolution on a crappy movie... I can't see how a significant price increase is worth it.

Black America Is the Soul of the Urban Market
(Advertising Age)
-
[A]s the audience widens, it's critical to understand and remember what drives the trend. And what drives the trend is the mindset of the consumer -- who at the core, is black. My take: while I agree with the general premise here, you can see what makes this such a difficult topic: if you say that only black agencies can make the "urban" piece authentic, what do you tell them when they pitch for so-called "mainstream" work? Damned if you do? Damned if you don't.

Olympic Torch San Francisco Visit Protest Photos
It hasn't been much of a protest -- so far -- as the organizers totally faked out the protesters: the torch appeared nearly a dozen blocks away.

Hollywood's 6 Favorite Offensive Stereotypes
(Cracked.com)
-
People think of Hollywood as the most liberal place in the known universe, but really that only goes as far as the drugs and orgies are concerned. When it comes to minorities, Hollywood still seems to have a few shamefully corny and simplistic roles in mind. Here's the six Hollywood stereotypes that can't die soon enough. My take: it's too short a list. It's missing obvious and persistent stereotypes, like the Asian who's good at technology, computers, science and math, and the White guy who's allowed to immediately come in and make all the big decisions, and who can forget the suspicious-looking, excessively sweaty -- or swarthy -- Arab dude who never befriends the group. Sleeper cell? Anyone? But it's a good start.

81% in U.S. poll say nation is on the wrong track
(International Herald Tribune)
-
In the poll, 81 percent of respondents said they believed "things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track," up from 69 percent a year ago and 35 percent in early 2002.My take: But the question is: which 81%? Also, if 20% of the people have 80% of the wealth (and power) in this country, does it really matter what the 81% think? Think about it.
