The Journalist Bailout Program
(TypePad.com)
-
"Because your Tumblr and Tweets, while clever, will not pay your bills."If real journalists started blogging as if their collective livelihoods depended on it, that would probably be a good thing. Still, I want to banish the word "bailout" from contemporary discourse, because it harbors this implication that people were (and are) helpless to prevent the situation they find themselves in. Newspapers and print magazines have been dying for a long time, but it seems -- to this outsider, at least -- as if most of the people in these business dismissed the threats and fiddled while their industries burned.

2012 Trailer
(Moviefone)
-
Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. '2012' is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world. You can say the same thing about this forthcoming flick as you can about any: either it will be incredibly entertaining, or god-awfully boring. I'm hoping for the former. If the world's going to end in four years, let's close it out with a Hollywood ending, shall we?

Kirby on gay marriage: It's official - I don't care
(Salt Lake Tribune)
-
Shouldn't it be against the law for stupid people to get married? What's more harmful to society - two well-dressed men getting married and settling down, or two idiots tying the knot and cranking out any number of additional idiots?

Obama and the War on Brains
(NYTimes.com)
-
Barack Obama's election is a milestone in more than his pigmentation. The second most remarkable thing about his election is that American voters have just picked a president who is an open, out-of-the-closet, practicing intellectual.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have always turned around "South Park" episodes with impressive speed, but Wednesday night was ridiculous.I hope Obama has a good sense of humor, because all Presidents are fodder units for comedy.
