Yankees vs. Sawx, Game 7
(CBS Sportsline)
-
It's over, and if I didn't see the whole horror-show, I wouldn't believe it. But I suppose, in some Shakespearian, tragic sort of way, this was bound to happen: every time in they've ever met in the playoffs, going back several generations, the Yankees have beaten the Red Sox. It seems that this year, fate would have it that the Sox would find the most improbable path to victory, and finally break through. Hats off to them, because this won't happen again in another 86 years. It remains to be seen if they will be graceful winners, since it's not something they're used to; I know their fans will prove themselves to be the blowhard asses that they are. To those folks, enjoy your AL pennant, but just remember that this win, as amazing as it is, still doesn't erase your curse... you still have a World Series to play. Time will tell. On to the NFL.

Yanks vs. Sawx, Game 6
(FOXSports.com)
-
All baseball, all the time. Welcome to the theater of the common man. In witnessing this colossal collapse by the Yanks, everything else has taken a back-seat. I feel like a kid again, anxious for the game to come on, unable to concentrate, nerve-wracked. If not for a big meeting today I'd call in sick, because I know I'm not going to get anything done until after the game. Oh brother. The Yankees are supposed to beat the Red Sox, as sure as the Roadrunner is supposed to beat Wile E. Coyote, as certain as Lucy is supposed to pull the ball right before Charlie Brown is to kick it. Anything else is surely a sign of coming apocalypse. This is what it's come to? Cartoon metaphors and nervousness. Now I know how Sox fans must feel all the time. Still, there is that curse...

Yanks vs. Sawx, Game 5

Deja vu all over again...This series is driving me crazy. I'll give it to the Sawx for showing some heart, but now it's time for the Yankees to end this dance.

Yankees vs. Red Sox
(MLB.com)
-
The story's not over, but it's becoming a laugher. More on that later. For now, if you ever wanted a definition for the term "ass-kicking" tonight's game was it, in prime time. Godzilla Matsui is making a strong case for post-season MVP.

Dream On - It's not a dream...we have the package art
(TVShowsOnDVD.com)
-
We've already told you that Dream On - Seasons 1 & 2 is heading to store shelves on October 12th. Now Universal has finally brought us the cover art for this release. Enjoy! In my opinion, "Dream On" is the funniest, adult comedy of the last 20 years, and a brilliant use of lost footage from bad television from the '50s and '60s. This one paved the way for HBO's entire Sunday Night oeuvre.

Big Fat Obnoxious Boss
(Fox.com)
-
FOX busts down the boardroom doors and invites viewers into the outrageous unscripted comedy, "Big Fat Obnoxious Boss." The $250,000 cash prize is real, but that's about it.Brilliant. I think the difference between this, and "The Benefactor" is that we know this one's joke from jump.

Samarra Burning...
(Baghdad Burning blog)
-
Riverbend: "What exactly are precision attacks?! How can you be precise in a city like Samarra or in the slums of Sadir City on the outskirts of Baghdad? Many of the areas under attack are small, heavily populated, with shabby homes several decades old. In Sadir City, many of the houses are close together and the streets are narrow. Just how precise can you be with missiles and tanks? We got a first-hand view of America's "smart weapons". They were smart enough to kill over 10,000 Iraqis in the first few months of the occupation."

The Media Sucks, And It's Your Fault
(apophenia blog)
-
Danah Boyd: "[N]either mainstream media nor bloggers cover news from less developed regions of the world. So, a research question emerges: in what ways are bloggers expanding the scope of the mainstream media and in what ways are they duplicating it?"Good question, and of course while I don't have a focused answer, I do have a notion, that goes something like this: 1) It seems to me that many people -- not me, though -- blog to get recognition; 2) to gain that recognition, they need to generate attention; 3) to generate attention, they need to blog/post about things that everyone else is talking about. Is that not the essence of a meme -- an idea that spreads like a virus through a large group of like-minded souls, emphasis on large and like-minded? Don't blogs owe a great part of their existence to the creation and spreading of memes? I think the key word in Boyd's quote above is "fantasy." I think most people -- I say most, not all, probably the 80/20 rule applies here -- get into blogging (self-publishing) not to show that their voice is unique but to show that their voice is common. Welcome to the monoculture jungle, we got fun and same! The vast majority of the so-called blogosphere, like everything else in our larger mediasphere, is rather banausic. She's right: the media sucks and it is your fault!

Comparison of life in Piscataway, New Jersey, Kochi, Japan, and Zhuzhou, China
-
Comparison of life in Piscataway, New Jersey; Kochi, Japan; and Zhuzhou, Hunan Province, China.Interesting worldview. Maybe Laosan, who's lived in both Jersey and deep, backwater China for most of his life, can post his own comparisons, especially regarding the "tolerance of non-white/white foreigners" line item.

Bootleg RSS: TV Edition
-
This is interesting: TV listings as RSS feeds. Now if only you had a PVR or set-top box that could read these datastreams, you would be on your way to allowing viewers to create custom program guides. More building blocks. Who will pick up the pieces and make something useful or compelling out of all of this?

'White Power' music targets teens
(Silver Rights blog)
-
Here in the blogosphere, weblogs, most of them Far Right, publish falsehoods meant to bolster white privilege and white supremacy daily. We have an obligation to confront and expose those lies. Truth telling, like charity, begins at home.Another thought-provoking post over at Silver Rights. I always enjoy the clarity of her writing, and heartily agree with her sentiments. Let's use our weblogs to expose these lies.

Last.FM
-
Last.fm is a personalised online radio station that plays the right music to the right people. Songs spread from listener to listener.Like I'm starting to think: podcasting + blogging + social networks = personal media networks ... wait until we add stuff like Tivo2Go. Well, like I said, just thinking out loud. It seems like all of the building blocks are starting to appear all over the place. Someone just needs to tie them together in compelling ways... and then there will be a bunch of media company lawyer battalions waiting to launch their shock-and-awe offensive. Because we all just lurv what the media companies have been shoveling at us these days.

iPodder, the cross-platform Podcast receiver
(Sourceforge.net)
-
The iPodder team is proud to announce the new version is released. Version 1.0 comes with a lot of new features. (This iPodder was formerly known as iSpider). Mac and Windows versions available. My blog is becoming 100% geek news these days instead of my usual eclectic mix of random meanness on cyberculture, propaganda and absurdity. Nevertheless, the Man has me pickin' cotton in double-time with the current project, so blogging of substance (or fluff, depending on your perspective) will be sporadic. The thing about tech/geek posts is they're easy: you see something that you want to play with and blog it. See it, blog it. No value judgements required. More on that later, but this 'podcasting' stuff is cool, and not just for the iPod set! What we're talking about here is taking the concept of blogging, and moving it off the computer into your portable listening device. That's really deep man, perhaps even, uh, "paradigm shifting." But you didn't hear that from me!

How-To: Podcasting (aka How to get Podcasts and also make your own)
(Engadget.com)
-
This week?s How-To is a three part special complete with our first Engadget ?Podcast? MP3. The first part is how to get ?Podcasts? on your iPod. So what?s a Podcast? To put it simply, a Podcast is an audio file, a MP3, most likely, in talk show format, along with a way to subscribe to the show and have it automatically delivered to your iPod when you plug in to iTunes.I'm telling you, I'm starting to see it, how it can all come together: social networking, blogging, and "podcasting": true, customized, on-demand, broadcasting networks. Sorry, this is more geek-level stuff, but I think it's laying important plumbing and groundwork.

Rumsfeld: "No Al Qaeda-Saddam Link"
(Sky News)
-
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says he knows of no "strong, hard evidence" linking Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda...[b]efore the war on Iraq, Mr Rumsfeld had told the world there was a definite link between Osama bin Laden's terror network and Iraq's leader.Sky News is not a U.S. publication. What other admissions are Dubya's cronies making that most of the country will never learn about... until it's too late?

Role Model at Bat?
(PopMatters)
-
Watching Aaron, Mays, Robinson, and the others gave me people to root for, people in whom I could invest a personal interest. It wasn't (and isn't) that I couldn't appreciate the talents of white stars; I simply could glean more from the feats of the black ones. What they did meant more to me for the sole reason that they looked like me. Were they role models? No...But they were exemplars of success.Seems appropriate, on the eve of the MLB playoffs.

Sex is a simple equation
(Independent UK)
-
Mathematics is all about patterns, whether it's in the stock-market, society or in your bedroom... relationships and romance are nothing more than a dynamic weave of different possibilities being played out, meaning that maths can be used to used to simulate conditions within a relationship - or an orgasm.Reading, 'riting, and relationships? China strives for its own global mega-brands
(Asia Times Online)
-
[I]f one were asked to recall a Chinese brand of global standing, few names spring to the mind in the league with Coca-Cola, Microsoft or McDonalds. It is this failing that the Chinese now hope to address as they relentlessly march forward on many other fronts, leaving their footprints on new-generation sciences, cutting-edge technologies, the moon and the outer space beyond. The race towards a global monoculture continues, unabated.
