Diebold comes clean, admits that its e-voting machines are faulty
(Engadget)
-
A "critical programming error that can cause votes to be dropped while being electronically transferred from memory cards to a central tallying point" has been part of the software for ten years.Faulty voting machines and hanging chads, oh my! In an election year too? Oh boy! Can't wait until November.

Microsoft enlists Seinfeld for ad campaign
(Media biz)
-
Jerry Seinfeld will be one of the key celebrity pitchmen in Microsoft Corp's $300 million advertising campaign aimed at changing its image.I loved Seinfeld's show, but this could change my opinion. I know the guy's probably just doing it for the money, but Microsoft? Really, Jerry? No soup for you!

Assembling your 'party': Five kinds of friends you should make on social networks
(Andy De Soto blog)
-
Making 'friends' on social networking sites like Digg, Facebook, Twitter, or FriendFeed is a lot like assembling an old-school RPG party: it takes certain kinds of people, carefully balanced, to make the social networking experience a pleasant one.Helpful.

The Digital Stakhanovite
(W3C Q&A Weblog)
-
The big issue is how do we design the technology so that it will accomodate a maximum of use cases (social contexts) without making impossible for others to exist. There is not yet a definitive answer.

Find an Undervalued Asset. Fix It Up. Flip It. (Now It's Web Sites, Not Houses)
(NYTimes.com)
-
Dave Hermansen did not own a bird or a cage when he bought bird-cage.com, an online store, for $1,800 three years ago. He simply saw a Web site that was "very, very poorly done," and begged the owners to sell it to him. He then redesigned the site, added advertising and drove up traffic. Last December, he sold it for $173,000.There are some truly atrocious Web sites out there, sitting on top of valuable content niches. Hmmm.....

As a tribute, Democrats to place Clinton's name in nomination
(International Herald Tribune)
-
Her name will not be on the general election ballot this fall, but Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential candidacy will receive one final tribute when her name is formally placed into nomination at the Democratic convention. This looks really fishy to me. I don't like it.

Favre says arm feeling 'fatigued,' will ask for fewer throws in afternoon
(ESPN.com)
-
"I felt 38 today," Favre said Wednesday after New York's morning practice. "I'm not going to lie to you."Hmm...is a bit of 'buyer's remorse' starting to creep into the back of Jets' coach Eric Mangini's melon? How messed up would it be if it turns out that the Jets got rid of a QB with a pop-gun arm--Chad Pennington--but who was an effective field general, a guy who knew the offense inside-out, and generally, was considered extremely smart, for a guy who has a rocket-arm, but who isn't generally included in the list of what you'd call 'cerebral' quarterbacks--if said rocket-arm QB's weapon is shooting blanks? Oh, woe is me, I'm feeling 38-year today too. J-E-T-S. Jets. Jets. Jets.

Isaac Hayes dead at 65
(CNN Wire/CNN.com)
-
Soul singer and arranger Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy awards and an Oscar for the theme from the 1971 action film "Shaft," has died, sheriff's officials in Memphis, Tennessee, reported Sunday. He's a legend, both musically, and within the ethereal firmament of pop culture, with his involvment as the voice of Chef in South Park, so he will not be forgotten, even in our here today/gone later today culture. It's been a tough weekend for big-time Black™ entertainment celebrities, what with Bernie Mac passing away as well.

Supremacists hope for boost from Obama win
(MSNBC.com)
-
They're not exactly rooting for Barack Obama, but prominent white supremacists anticipate a boost to their cause if he becomes the first black president. His election, they say, would trigger a backlash--whites rising up, a revolution of sorts--that they think is long overdue.Oh yeah, here it comes: call me facetious, but the country's falling apart and it's all because of Black" people. Didn't you know that blacks control the entire global banking system? They've foreclosed your home, in your non-integrated neighborhood. Yes, they run the real estate cartel as well. They've jacked up the price of your oil, for your gas-guzzling SUV. Because underneath those Saudi turbans, funded by a gazillion petrodollars, are really just more black people. They've outsourced your jobs to third-world nations, because they run the Fortune 1000, and what they really want to do is make sure that their brown- and yellow-skinned friends also leapfrog ahead of you. They've taken your tax dollars and launched an illegal war that will never end in the Middle East, while they pump all the profits back into their global-spanning conglomerates, and away from your schools and communities. Hell, they've even ruined your favorite sports, like golf and tennis, where the only way a white person can win is if the black people don't play. And for chrissakes, that rap music that your kids love, it's just a blight on all things decent and white, and all the billions of dollars that that enterprise generates goes right into the pockets of, you guessed it, black people. If this guy Obama gets into the "White" House, that's the last and final sign that the apocalypse is coming. Mobilize now. Do what you can to save what's left of this great white country, after all, it was your forefathers who broke their backs picking cotton and crops and sh*t that turned into billions of dollars of wealth for this nation, which later was just squandered by, yeah, you got it, black people. Keep rope alive. Keep rope alive.

China in Africa
(TheRoot.com)

There are already more Chinese living in Nigeria than there were Britons during the height of the empire... [but] despite uncomfortable echoes of imperialism, in practice China is the only global power laying the tracks for an Africa-wide economic renaissance.

The Olympics: Unveiling Police State 2.0
(HuffPo)
-
It's harder to see the dangers when these same technologies creep into every day life closer to home-networked cameras on U.S. city streets, "fast lane" biometric cards at airports, dragnet surveillance of email and phone calls. But for the global homeland security sector, China is more than a market; it is also a showroom.

Comic actor Bernie Mac dies
(CNN.com)
-
Comic actor Bernie Mac died early Saturday of complications from pneumonia, according to a family member and his publicist. He was 50.One of the Original Kings of Comedy, I always thought that Bernie Mac's distinguishing comedic skill was that he could be both profane and profoundly intelligent at the same time. It's rare to see that combination in comedians. He'll be missed.

Kim Kardashian's breasts: A two part study in Giant Ass Counterbalance Dynamics
(The Superficial blog)

I'm no physicist, but with the combined density of Kim Kardashian's ass and breasts (which act as counterweights), how does she not have her own gravitational pull and/or break through the Earth's crust with every step?Pretty incredible "architecture" any way you look at it in my book. Thank you!

Gilbert Arenas' Million-Dollar Pool: The Pics
(DC Sports Bog blog)
-
These are confirmed as being photos of Gilbert's pool...some facts:
- The stone for the "mountain" cost nearly half a million dollars;
- There are three different fish tanks, one going in the "grotto," one in the front hall, and one in the basement. Their normal retail price would have been about another half-million;
- The tank in the basement will have a recess with a couch in it so Gil can "relax and look up at the fish;"
- The work is scheduled to be finished in August [2008]
Recession, you say?

Shipping costs start to crimp globalization
(International Herald Tribune)
-
Cheap oil, the lubricant of quick, inexpensive transportation links across the world, may not return anytime soon, upsetting the logic of diffuse global supply chains that treat geography as a footnote in the pursuit of lower wages.Even a New World Order needs cheap gas, apparently.
