Rape ads criticized by men of color
(SF Gate)
-
An African American man with a badly bruised nose and eye stares down from an ad on a San Francisco bus shelter. Small type below his face commands, "Don't take rape lying down." The ad is meant to convince women they can fight back against potential rapists. Other ads in the series feature a Latino and a white man. Backers of the ad -- an Oakland women's group called Bamm -- wanted the messages to be provocative. The next time you see a brutha walking down the street with a nasal-strip, this might be something to think about.

Beautiful Women
(USS Clueless)
-
The long-term survival of a tribe depends on the production of healthy children ... Interestingly, the least valuable member of a tribe is a young man. A significant number of young men can be lost without substantially damaging the ability of the tribe to create and raise children. One opinion on why things are the way they are ... and pretty good one at that, thinks BoyCaught.

Space Junk!
(Cincinnati CityBeat)
-
According to a study released by the National Research Council, more than 4,500 spacecraft have been launched into space since 1957 and, although nearly 2,200 of them remain in orbit, only 450 still are functional.BoyCaught's mom, a magna cum laude graduate of her college, but still a little superstitious, used to have this notion that too many rockets were being blasted into outer space, and that couldn't be a good thing in the long run. Once again, it looks like Mom's always right.

Man Guilty in Road Rage Dog Death
(Yahoo! News)
-
A jury took less than an hour to convict Andrew Burnett, 27, of San Jose, of animal cruelty for killing Leo, a fluffy white bichon frise, in an episode that outraged dog lovers. Dog lovers and others had donated $120,000 to find Leo's killer - more than the reward in many local missing-child cases. It's extremely sad ... not that the dog was killed (that's tragic and unfortunate.) No, it's extremely sad that a group of people can raise more money to track down a dog-killer than to find lost children. Sorry, but these are misplaced priorities, and that b.s. about pets and unconditional love from pets is garbage. No one said loving (or even tolerating) other people was easy, but if you value a pet's life more than a human, your basically checking your humanity at the door.

Broken Boys?
(caterina.net)
-
There's something so wounding about growing up a boy, especially a broken-hearted sensitive boy stuck in a tough-guy demographic with no fine words for his finer feelings. There was something about this scene that made my heart clutch because that guy was going to remember that moment when he tried to speak his heart, and was swiftly and utterly silenced.Pretty good recounting of an eavesdropping on a couple of guy's guys conversating about one of the fellows' recent breakup. Women always say they wish men could be more emotive and in touch with their feelings, and here was a muscle-beach guy who just couldn't get the words out, and even if he could, his knucklehead friend wouldn't have been able to grok it anyway. Women say they want guys who can be more sensitive and expressive, but BoyCaught thinks that they mostly want those guys only if the fellow will listen to their stories. As soon as a guy like this found a way to pour his heart out through his mouth, everyone, girl- and guy-friends alike, would start heading toward the hills. So what's the manly solution to all of this? Of course: violence.

Disney milestone sweet for actor, animator

Dr. Joshua Sweet, one of the heroes of Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire, is a heroic member of the team searching for the undersea world of Atlantis. If you can't deal with them as cartoon characters, how the hell are you gonna deal with them when they move into the neighborhood? (b/w Rebecca's Pocket, solid.)

Refusing to Save Africans
(NY TImes)
-
Giving the back of his hand to the suffering of millions, a key Bush administration official is opposing any extensive use of the life-extending anti-AIDS drugs in Africa, insisting that the health care infrastructure is too primitive and that Africans, in most cases, are incapable of following the regimen.Want a viewpoint that symbolizes the coldness of the current Bush administration? This is article sums it up very neatly. (User Name/Password may be required; use cibblog/cibcib if you want.) (b/w Kill Your TV)

netscape and aol/time-warner, part two
-
“...It's yet another example of centralization of control: now we have a company who own a huge part of the news, music, magazine, motion picture, and television industries also having control, via AOL, of one of the primary channels by which the general public gets online. That kind of vertical integration and massive captive audience is not healthy for a free society. It leads inevitably to a reduction of choices and a reduction of viewpoints that can become heard.”

Dealing with Blogers (sic)

If PR people give access to all bloggers, PR people probably won't have any time or product to send when the Washington Post calls. But if PR people dismiss the bloggers out of hand as "not being important enough" they might infuriate small, but vocal groups of dedicated supporters ranting on major sites, like epinions.com and deja.com.Yeah! That's the ticket! (b/w Dr. Menlo>)

Drug May Help Curb Compulsive Gambling
-
A pill commonly used to treat alcoholism and drug addiction may be able to help people overcome compulsive gambling, a new University of Minnesota study has found. Researchers showed that the drug naltrexone, which the Food and Drug Administration approved for alcoholism in 1995 and for drug addiction in 1985, was able to reduce gambling urges in almost 75 percent of the 20 people in the study.Someday, they'll have a pill for everything, but until then, BoyCaught suggests that instead of doubling-down, you pop a couple of these ... The Casino of Authenticity and Karaoke
(MalcolmMcLaren.com)
-
“We are living in a karaoke world, a world without a point of view. Karaoke is mouthing the words to other people's songs, singing someone else's lyrics. Karaoke is an amateur performance of other people's ideas. It is a virtual replay of something that has happened before: life by proxy - liberated by hindsight, unencumbered by the messy process of creativity and free from any real responsibility beyond the actual performance.”The man who discovered The Sex Pistols, and Bow Wow Wow (whoah, Annabella), has a interesting take on life: we live in a consumer culture, and we are becoming commodities. It's like the line from Blade Runner: "I'm not in the business. I am the business." (b/w MetaScene)

Rosa Parks Portal
-
On December 1, 1955, seamstress Rosa Parks changed America forever when she was arrested for refusing to yield her seat to a white patron on a Montgomery, Alabama city bus. Mrs. Parks was found guilty of disorderly conduct and that lead directly to the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott. However, Mrs. Parks was not the "quiet seamstress" as the media has often portrayed her.Thank you.

Corporate Websites Suck
-
All we hear about these days from mass media outlets is about how much money you can make on the web. All of today's ad money goes to pluggin a corporate website. From The Gap Store Online where you can spend your money to Pepsi World which is just more ads. But the Internet is about information, Right? It's not suppose to be about money or corporate identity. When your online looking for literary criticism about Toni Morrison you shouldn't be bombarded with another interview with Oprah Winfrey ...And how!
