From the Erotic Domain, an Aerobic Trend in China
(NYTimes.com)
-
Pole-dancer in China: "Keeping your grip is the hardest part," she said. "It's really easy to slide downward."Sliding downward, indeed...into Hell! You see, as soon as the West gets you hooked on their ways, you become their bitch. Hat-tip to Laosan for the lede.

Obama's Berlin Speech Did Not Rid Him of European Skeptics
(NYTimes.com)
-
Mr. Obama makes Europeans uncomfortable.Pardon me for saying this: but when it comes to American politics, f*ck Europeans. Stay out of our business. If I had any opinion -- and I don't -- on, say, the Norwegian parliamentary bickering, or on the political divide between Socialists and the National Front in France, do you think any of those boobs would give two sh*ts about what I thought? Do you think I would? Europeans play soccer, and love it, almost to the exclusion of any other organized team sport. That in itself should tell you how ill-suited Europeans are for judging American politics and other assorted reindeer games. London, Berlin, Paris, Munich? Keep your opinions about US Politics to yourself.

50 Cent Sues Taco Bell Over Value-Menu Stunt
(Advertising Age)
-
Taco Bell invited him to change his name to 79 Cent, 89 Cent or 99 Cent, after the prices on the new menu. But Mr. Cent, you do realize that 79, 89, and 99 are all larger than 50. How are we diluting your brand by proposing to raise your numeric value? Wait a minute, you have a brand? Huh? Exactly what is the brand promise of "50 Cent?" Now, while I am being facetious here, this situation underscores Corporate America's condescending take on Black consumers: get a rapper to endorse some cheap food, and cullud folks will beat a path to your cash register. Look at Taco Bell's alleged slogan for this campaign: Why Pay Mo? What is that? Ebonics? It's insulting tripe coming from that lily-white ivory toward called the advertising industry. I heartily applaud the fact that Curtis Jackson (aka "50 Cent") is hitting back just like a corporation would: by suing and going after the money.

Why China is the REAL master of the universe
(Daily Mail Online (UK))
-
The dire warnings from the International Monetary Fund this week that the West now faces the largest financial shock since the Great Depression, while the Asian economies are still powering ahead, simply underlines our vulnerability in this new world order.Read this, and then re-read it again. It's fear-mongering, pure and simple: ooh, suddenly the world's a much scarier place when some *ssholes not from the UK or Europe are starting to call the shots. From my perspective, they're all *ssholes, whether they're from London or Beijing or Bangalore. They're all competition, and while my people are down, we're still here. It will be interesting to see how these folks, the so-called West, play the game when they're starting to fall behind. I expect we're in a for a lot of turbulence, and lots of saber-rattling ahead, be it political, economic, or military. The sun doesn't set on the British Empire-type bullsh*t! But every dog is going to have its day. In this life, or the next. And some dogs' days are coming to an end, clearly.

Making Love (Out of Nothing At All) May Be Good Reality TV
(Advertising Age)
-
Not only does arranged marriage seem to work well in the long run, it's also proof that you can find love without searching forever for your one, true "soul mate."Most cultures depend on arranged marriages. In the US, our divorce rate continues to climb. Maybe we should take a closer look at the numbers and take a chance on increasing the odds of success. Going out and meeting that "right" person -- for a lifetime, not for right now -- seems more like a crapshoot these days.

Saints acquire Shockey for draft picks
(ESPN.com)
-
I liked Shockey's on-field spirit and antics, although I'm sure it wore thin on his teammates and competitors. The truth is the Giants won the Super Bowl without him last season. Moreover, the team started gelling being Eli Manning after Shockey left the picture. It's interesting that the two biggest offensive stars of the Jints in the last three years, Shockey and Tiki Barber, had nothing to do with the team's championship. Trading him while he still has value is perhaps the best contribution Shockey will make to the Giants success going forward. Thanks dude.

The San Diego Chargers star isn't running for office, though. He's not throwing his support behind any presidential candidates or raising any sort of awareness, either. Our Googley advice to students: Major in learning
(Official Google Blog)
-
At the highest level, we are looking for non-routine problem-solving skills. We expect applicants to be able to solve routine problems as a matter of course. After all, that's what most education is concerned with. But the non-routine problems offer the opportunity to create competitive advantage, and solving those problems requires creative thought and tenacity.

.ME Top Level Domain launch indicative of new TLD rollouts
(easyDNS Blog)
-
It runs contrary to industry standards where registrars whip their customer base into a frenzy over an exaggerated need to protect one's trademarks and claim one's stake in the latest "must have" TLD. The fact is, all you really need to care about are .COM, .NET and .ORG plus the ccTLD of the country you live in or do a lot of business in... That most of these new TLDs roll out with initial 2-year registration period minimums are just an outright cash grab from the registry that most participating registrars are happy to join in on.I like the thinking here. That's why I use these guys, easyDNS, as my DNS provider. No, I don't work for the company or invest in it. I'm just a satisified customer.

why you should never be a startup girlfriend
(la vita e bella blog)

For all of you ladies who may or may not be flirting with the idea of dating a startup programmer, you should know exactly what you're getting yourself into...I think this advice could apply to almost any chick dating dudes in most technology jobs. The startup aspect just makes time demands that much more intense. And that's right baby, I am thinking that my gadget is almost prettier than you. Almost.

Programming: The New Literacy
(Edutopia)
-
[T]he single skill that will, above all others, distinguish a literate person is programming literacy, the ability to make digital technology do whatever, within the possible one wants it to do -- to bend digital technology to one's needs, purposes, and will, just as in the present we bend words and images. Some call this skill human-machine interaction; some call it procedural literacy. Others just call it programming.I agree, and I was an English major in college who now makes a living programming and developing applications. So, in my mind, anyone with some level of education and intelligence can become competent in programming, it just takes the will.

Zhen Zhende
(the black China hand)
-
"I found these articles interesting because having lived in both Beijing and Shanghai, I don't think that they represent China at all. Rather, I think they represent a Western platonic conception of China."As China gets ready for its two-week closeup, for all the world to see in August, this is a good time to start poking this propagandized myth we're being fed. Laosan's take is an interesting start.

Warning - Habits May Be Good for You
(NYTimes.com)
-
Diseases and disorders caused by dirty hands - like diarrhea - kill a child somewhere in the world about every 15 seconds, and about half those deaths could be prevented with the regular use of soap, studies indicate. But getting people into a soap habit, it turns out, is surprisingly hard.On the one hand, this is a wonderful story about how getting people to wash their hands can save lives. But the more I read it, the more I reflected on the fact that a lot of the things we do on a daily basis may possibly be contrived by the marketing and media that bombard us daily. In a broad sense, it's a question of who actually controls you? Read the article again, it's spooky how some of these companies are employing psychologists to probe deep inside our minds, in order to get us to buy, but ultimately, what they're really doing is directing our actions.

Debris.
(Big Contrarian blog)
-
So many sites these days are filled with what can only be called 'debris.' Useless remnants of other sites: things of no real use, yet there anyway. This is one of those rare gem blog posts that really makes me stop and think about what I'm doing. My blog is pretty cluttered, and when I look back at what it was like when I started keeping public scribblings on my (note)blog in 1999, the interface was so much simpler then, and faster and easier to use. It's time for a little cleanup process.

Exacerbating the Ad Agency Racial Gap: A Commentary
(3-Minute Ad Age/Video)
-
[H]ow companies that are such experts in creating and nurturing corporate images can so neglect their own when it comes to racial diversity. The video clip speaks for itself, but my short answer to that question is simple: because most managers in all corners of the ad industry are incompetent. (Now, maybe that's true of all industries, but this is the ring of business hell I circle.) Maybe they care about having a workforce that accurately reflects the real world, but probably they don't. But even if they did care, few have the management skills to make a difference; they're mostly glorified salesmen and account people, jobs that are more about kissing client *ss than building truly integrated teams; they're not managers, leaders, or motivators of people. By the way, one of the fourteen companies that didn't show up to this commission meeting was the parent company of my organization. Not a good sign.

Review: Wanted (2008)
-
This movie had a great beginning, a great ending, a bland middle, some fabulous special effects, and a protagonist who transformed so quickly from super wimp into world class killer-for-hire that you simply couldn't believe in him. Add it all up and you -- well, I -- end up with barbaric, glossy cinema that didn't amount to much. Don't get me wrong, Angelina Jolie is in it, so that's worth at least the $10.75 admission, but to me, this movie was like one of those multiplex hot dogs that you get when you go to see a flick like this: when that red hot is rolling on those greasy spindles and you order it, and after you dress it up with mustard, and relish, and maybe even ketchup, if you're weird, you are expecting a tasty treat. But then you bite into it, and you realize this hot dog may have been sitting on those rollers for the last three weeks, and the relish is sour, and the mustard is runny, and suddenly you don't like what you're chewing on. This movie was sort of like that: what should have been a crisp, exhilarating thrill ride and a slick paean to ultra-violence, with Angelina, and even the great Morgan Freeman alongside, turned out to be a movie that isn't worth a second viewing, even when it replays on free TV. This is a long way of saying: Wanted was a brutal, muddled mess. I wanted so much more.

Jackson's rebuke boosts Obama
(Scotsman.com)
-
Mr Jackson has reportedly complained in private that Mr Obama's campaign has been ignoring him and other black activists in his run for the US presidency. While the comments have probably ended what hopes Mr Jackson had of a place in a future Obama administration, they come as a gift to the candidate in his desire to move towards the political centre. Mr Obama has been keen to distance himself from the left-wing label that the Republican John McCain has attached to him as both scramble to attract swing voters. Mr Obama has sought to portray himself as a politician who happens to be black, rather than as a black politician.Leave it to a non-US publication to properly frame what Jesse Jackson's boneheaded comment means to Obama (he can separate himself from the old Black guard and make political hay from that), and how Obama has been positioning himself all along (his Black-ness is just incidental). I tell you now, I'm still not sold on Obama, but given the other choice (i.e. not a chance in hell for me voting for that other guy), I'm pretty much painted into a corner as a member of the electorate. But the thing that's been perfectly clear to me since he jumped into the forefront of the US political world, and that this Jesse scuffle highlights, is that Obama ain't Black. On the other hand, he ain't white either. He's something completely new and unique and unpredictable for this POTUS job, and people need to start recognizing this fact. Change is coming, but will you be able to comprehend it. And Jesse, you should know by now, Obama is not a brutha. In the long run, that might be a good thing, or not. Please adjust your expectations accordingly.
