White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack
-
"...[W]hites are taught to think of their lives as morally neutral, normative, and average, and also ideal, so that when we work to benefit others, this is seen as work which will allow "them" to be more like 'us.'"If only those uppity Negroes would act more like us! Are there any white folks out there willing to admit that their lives in America are made easier simply because of their skin color? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
And speaking of Ferris Bueller, that fictional character could have only been a white kid; almost all of the things he did in the movie -- from hacking the school computer, stealing a car, impersonating a businessman, to bumrushing the mic on the parade float -- would have had him thrown under the jail had he been black. That invisible white privilege is celebrated and encouraged widely in pop culture.

What Did Eisenhower Mean When He Warned of a Military Industrial Complex? Take a Look at the Carlyle Group

And within that area, they focus heavily on government-regulated industries -- anything that depends very heavily on policymaking and legislation coming out of Washington, D.C.The so-called war on terrorism sure starting to look like a gravy chain for a bunch of Bush and Papa Bush (mostly) cronies.

Ten Appalling Lies We Were Told About Iraq
(AlterNet)
-
The mainstream press, after an astonishing two years of cowardice, is belatedly drawing attention to the unconscionable level of administrative deception. They seem surprised to find that when it comes to Iraq, the Bush administration isn't prone to the occasional lie of expediency but, in fact, almost never told the truth. Those who opposed him wanted Clinton impeached for lying about his personal infidelities. Bush's lies are much wider in scope and damaging on an international level. His lies are costing the lives of a growing number of American soldiers, untold billions of our tax dollars, and our reputation abroad. He's a Banana Republican. But then, things never ring true when Dubya's involved. From that first butterfly ballot, his administration was built on a bed of lies. But what to do?

Orrin Hatch's real motives
(Politech)
-
Charles Platt: "So, here's the way things work in the real world. Legislators will say just about anything to please their donors and constituents, and may even include flagrantly unconstitutional or unworkable language in new laws, in the happy knowledge that the ACLU and other organizations will file suit to get rid of the offensive provisions. At that point the legislators send out another fund raising letter, saying, in effect, 'I tried to do what was right, but these damned liberals own the court. Send me more money so that I can continue fighting the good fight against porn, illegal immigrants, drugs, copyright theft, [fill in the blank].'"So, basically, to be a successful politician in these times, you apparently have to master the art of looking busy but really doing nothing.

No AdSense for you!
(0xDECAFBAD blog)
-
"Your website is a type of website that we do not currently accept into our program."0xDECAFBAD, the pretty interesting weblog of a talented code geek, didn't qualify for Google's new AdSense program; a program that's supposed to create "revenue streams" for small web publishers. So, here again, you have Google, stretching out its massively growing tentacles, trying to set itself up as a toll-collector for all things web, and in their system, they'll decide who'll get the revenue and who won't. I better apply for my GoogleID while I have the chance. In Revelation 13:17, it is written: ...So that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. Wasn't it Seinfeld who said: now that's wicked Googly?

Going, going, gone ... for $517,000
(ESPN.com)
-
Barry Bonds' record-breaking 73rd home run ball was sold to comic book and action figure mogul Todd McFarlane.Mark McGwire's 70th, also owned by Spawn creator McFarlane, went for $3 million. Hank Aaron's 755th, arguably the greatest homer ball ever hit, went for $650K. Is Bonds' bad reputation responsible for his being valued less than these, and significantly less than McGwire's? I mean, come on, Bonds hit 73 home runs! Seventy-muhf**kin-three! Or maybe it's just another sign of a really bad economy.

Disposable Diapers
-
"We believe that when the goal of a disposable diaper, comprised completely of renewable materials has been achieved, the used product can then be source separated and composted along with other organic waste, thereby completing the cycle which would allow disposable diapers to become part of a "closed loop system."It kind of warms your heart, doesn't it? Some people are so committed to managing all of their kid's sh*t -- literally -- that they'll go to the ends of the earth to do it. The issue is not to carefully take into consideration the number of
blights on societykids you have, it's how to turn all that inevitable crap into compost piles -- literally. And if you keep squeezing out kids, don't worry, this solution is da sh*t, potna!

"I CAN'T F**KING STAND IT ANY MORE. And I'm not talking about the blogging ... I'm talking about the DISEASE. And let's face it, the DISEASE is everywhere -- it's on National Plutocratic Radio fer gawds sake, it's in the local mullet wrapper they dare to call a newspaper, it's on the radio, it's on TV, and it's in the news. It's everywhere on the news ..."Author! Author!

San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection
(SFPL.org)
-
The San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection consists of approximately 250,000 photographs. The subject headings listed here cover only the 30,000 photographs that have been digitized to date. After porno and auctions, this is an example of our higher aspirations for the Web and the Internet. Seriously, this is an amazing resource.

Court Limits Race As Factor in Admissions
(SJ Merc)
-
In two split decisions, the Supreme Court on Monday ruled that minority applicants may be given an edge when applying for admissions to universities, but limited how much a factor race can play in the selection of students.Surprising that the decisions went this way, but on first blush, given what's at stake, and considering the composition of this Supreme Court, it seems, well, fair. Giving some applicants "points" just because they are members of a certain group would seem a little hard to defend. But giving colleges and universities the leeway to create learning environments that actually resemble the real world seems right.

Phonecam Nation
(Wired 11.07)
-
As phonecams proliferate ... you'll never know when someone out there might snap your photo, then upload it for the world to see... [a]nd the news and gossip feed will be cross-platform: Minutes after a story breaks, television and Web sources will gather phonecam shots from the scene and disseminate them to viewers. The world will be one big reality show. One hallmark of a truly totalitarian state is when people begin spying on each other, thus obviating the need for the police apparatus to do any messy legwork. It's happening right before our eyes, sold to us as "cool gadgets." Wake the f*ck up people.
