Review: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
-
Here's what I know: One -- Jessica Alba looks great; but she can't act. Two -- the best actor in this movie was Laurence Fishburne, but his contribution was only as the voice of the computer-generated Silver Surfer we saw here. There was nothing remarkable or memorable about this flick. Assembly-line cinema, nothing more.

CEOs Words May Cook Whole Foods
(WSJ.com)
-
Mr. Mackey [was] telling fellow directors in internal documents that buying Wild Oats would enable the company to "avoid nasty price wars" that could "harm [Whole Foods] gross margins and profitability."Whole Foods, or as I like to call them, Whole Priced Foods, is like the Silver Surfer in the recently panned Fantastic Four movie: when he shows up, a week later the whole planet dies. When Whole Foods shows up in your neighborhood, that's the last horn, that's the final bowl being poured out, that's the last call: your neighborhood has been gentrified.

Men's preferences will never change[?]
(Big Fat Blog)

The ads depict fat women in iconic photographs: you've got Mena Suvari from American Beauty, Sharon Stone from Basic Instinct, and Marilyn Monroe from Some Like It Hot. But they're all fat.A Brazilian ad campaign for yogurt is controversial to some, confusing to others, and sexy to the few remaining holdouts. Decide your own beauty standards, check out all three ads.

It Might Pay to Follow Your Bliss
(New York Times)

A more compelling approach may be to focus more on what makes you happier -- because investing in your own well-being and quality of life may turn out to be more prudent and more profitable than you thought.May be useful advice for those who lack the ability to delay gratification and think about the future.

The Sopranos: My theory on how it ends
(HBO.com)
-
Spoilers are all over the place, and everyone who watches the show has a theory on how this luscious ode to sociopathology concludes, on what may be the biggest night in cable TV history. So, here's mine... and please note, I've been a fan from the very beginning, check out my review of the show way back in 2000! So, here it is: Tony's crew is squashed -- Chrissy Moltesanti, gone, Bobby Baccala, gone, Silvio, good as gone, Uncle June, broke and in a mental ward, Dr. Melfi "fires" Tony, his wife and kids hiding out. Essentially, every major character, outside of Tony has had the end of their character arc drawn out. Even Artie Bucco and his crazy wife got in their final shots. Everyone except Paulie "Walnuts" Gaultieri, the most paranoid gangster ever. And why is he so paranoid? Well, my theory is, he's paranoid because he's an informant, who may be playing both sides of the fence, and he's going to give Tony a chance to get out of "this thing of ours" and start a new life as "Kevin Finnerty." Where'd that name come from? Remember last season, when Tony was in the coma after being shot by Uncle June? He imagined he was some traveling salesman, named Kevin Finnerty, and along the way, he had lost his wallet (i.e. his "identity.") Paulie is the key to this whole scenario. I refuse to believe that this wonderfully complex story, that has awed us for years will simply end with a gunfight between the remaining Sopranos and the NY crew. It's been a masterpiece in television history, it should not end with a cliche.

Yao Ba
(the black China hand blog)

"Eighteen years ago today, I turned 21. Eighteen years ago today I was in a dorm in Dalian planning my birthday party. Eighteen years ago today we started the party, on the sixth floor common room and everyone was invited (you see 18 years ago there weren't any of us liuxuesheng in Dalian (or China to be exact) so having a party were everyone could attend was possible). Eighteen years ago today we even invited some of our Chinese friends...Eighteen years ago today was the day after PLA troops moved in to shut down and shut out the protesters that had been occupying Tian An Men Square."Happy birthday, little brother. You've seen a lot. You've done a lot. And you've seen many corners of this great big, f*cked-up world. And it's still as messed up today as it was 18 years ago, if not more. Hopefully, now that you're moving into an age where, maybe, you can influence things, you can make a real difference. You have nothing but opportunity in front of you... and unlike that time, 18 years ago, you have no battle tanks or helicopter gunships to worry about... at least not right now. Happy Birthday Laosan!

London 2012
-
A lot of people seem to be ripping the new logo for the 2012 Olympics in London; but when I see how it will be used across all media, I think it's pretty cool and thoroughly modern.
Update: London 2012 colors causes epileptic seizures (BBC)

[Gary] Sheffield has theory why fewer blacks play MLB
(ESPN.com)
-
In an interview with GQ magazine that's currently on newsstands, the typically outspoken Tigers designated hitter said Latin players have replaced African-Americans as baseball's most prevalent minority because they are easier to control.Actually, I do think there's a grain of truth to what Sheff has to say here: for instance, why, when outsourcing is such a rage in other industries as a cost-control measure, could someone not consider that Latin black players may be cheaper to sign than American Blacks; but, hey I'm not expert here either. Based on the the quotes in this squib, Sheffield delivers his message in such a ham-handed and distorted way that he does nothing but turn his point into parody. Baseball is just a small part of the racially-troubled society we call America; it is a microcosm. To think there's not a racial component to what happens in MLB is simplistic. But to expect a baseball player to diagnose complex social issues, just because millions of people have seen his face, is like asking a cashier at the local supermarket to explain why inflation is rising just because she deals with hundreds of people's money every day. It doesn't work like that. Sheff, next time, just pass on questions like this and stick to baseball. The mainstream media reaction to this will be swift and predictable: they'll try to position Sheff as some kind of race-baiter and buffoon, but will never investigate whether or not there's some validity to his arguments; angered mainstream listeners on sports talk radio shows will ask, what if someone said something like that, but about Black players instead. And a lot of sound and fury will rise, signifying nothing.

Witness?
(NBA.com)
-
Will LeBron and the Cavs rise above Tim Duncan and the Spurs in the 2007 NBA Finals? I don't know, but Nike's marketing campaign is working out perfectly, as we watch this guy slide magnificently into his preordained spot in the sport's vanguard. We all are witnesses to the perfect storm of sports, marketing, entertainment, overblown hype, and exploitation of young Black athletes in service of the almighty dollar. I'm a Knicks fan, I have no real rooting interests here, so I hope the series goes seven memorable games, with LeBron hitting a fadeaway trey in the second OT period of Game 7 as time expires to win it all. But as sports usually goes, when you wish for compelling drama, you usually end up with boring pabulum. So, I change my mind: I hope the Spurs crush them in an unwatchable four-game sweep. See, that's psychology.
