Oscars 2002: Somebody make it stop!
(Salon.com)
-
The Academy sensed this attitude was lurking like a murky cloud of spiritual unease over Middle Earth, and it is my (admittedly hostile) perception that they said to themselves, "Well, the Oscars are already fucked this year, so let's honor our Negroes! It's been a while. Call Whoopi."Fabulous! BoyCaught loves honest journalism ... especially from White folk. Tell it like it is baby!

Easter Eggs: Memento
(Eeggs.com)

... a screen will come up telling you you have found the hidden version of the film. Click on 'Play'. And then watch Memento in chronological order including the end credits rolling backwards at the beginning and the opening segment running forwards.Well, it is Easter ... and that's a pretty cool Easter Egg, if you're a movie freak like BoyCaught ... going to try it right now.

Trends - CABLE
(MarketSegment.com)
-
Urban African American households are more television-oriented than any other group. Premium channel subscription in urban cable homes is greater among African American and Hispanic subscribers than among Asians and Anglos. HBO, BET and Fox are mentioned most as favorite channels among urban African Americans. Univision, Telemundo, HBO and Fox are the favorite channels among urban Hispanics. Urban Asian households more closely mirror Anglo viewing preferences, citing ABC, NBC and CNN as favorites.

Trends - CONSUMER SPENDING
(MarketSegment.com)
-
African Americans have historically outspent Anglos in a number of product categories. The following list of apparel and accessory products (along with the African American to Anglo indices) highlights a difference in how African Americans behave as consumers: men's pants (index = 137), girls' dresses (160), girls' active sportswear (121), infant accessories (154), men's footwear (125), boys' footwear (233), women's footwear (140), and girls' footwear (110), among others. African American behavior behind this over-indexing in the apparel category, as is also the case in the food and telecommunications categories, accounts for the influence this segment has on many product-related trends, and helps explain why African Americans are a gauge of how non-African American consumers may behave in the future.

Trends - HOME IMPROVEMENT AND RETAIL
(MarketSegment.com)
-
Home improvement and retail marketers listen up: Hispanics and African Americans are highly aspirational as it relates to this category. 76% of African Americans and Hispanics feel that having a beautifully decorated home is a status symbol, compared to 69% of Anglos. Similarly, 43% of African Americans and 34% of Hispanics would like to make changes to their home or apartment, compared to 30% of Anglos. There is much evidence to support African Americans' interest in caring for their homes. The rise in popularity of Afrocentric merchandise (including houseware items) is but one example. Major department stores and specialty boutiques now carry African-inspired linens and textiles. These items are not simply confined to urban retail outlets, but are now regularly featured in mail order and online catalogues targeted to all consumers.

Trends - EATING HABITS
(MarketSegment.com)
-
Hispanics are far more likely than Anglos to claim they "eat the right foods, no matter how busy they are." Therein lies the paradox: despite the fact that most Hispanics are concerned about becoming overweight, they prefer to use sugar rather than sugar substitutes, one third claim they often over-indulge, and one-quarter report that their family eats a lot of fast food (African Americans are also twice as likely as Anglos to report that their family eats a lot of fast food).

Bush Acts to Drop Core Privacy Rule on Medical Data
(New York Times)
-
The White House wanted to avoid the political embarrassment Mr. Bush suffered when he altered Clinton policies on arsenic levels in drinking water, global warming, ergonomic rules and the contamination of school lunch meat with salmonella. But after studying the medical privacy rules and listening to the concerns of companies in the health care industry, the administration concluded that major provisions of the Clinton rules were unworkable. How can you not be concerned with the actions of this administration? They are frauds, polluters, energy extortionists, war mongers, and bit by bit they're trying to take away every last bit of privacy that individuals have. We all need to be concerned. We all need to be a little scared. And we all need to be skeptical of everything these people tell us, because they are not on the side of the average person. Multicultural Snapshot
(Market Segment Group)
-
Here's a few factoids from a weekly E-mail newsletter I receive published by one of the many companies in our newtork, The Market Segment Group:
RELATIONSHIP WITH CARS: Some interesting new information is surfacing concerning the relationships between various groups of consumers and their cars. African Americans are much more inclined than any other group to give their vehicle a name. When asked for an adjective to describe their car, Hispanics and African Americans are far more likely to see their cars as "sexy"; Anglos and Asians, on the other hand, say their car is "friendly." More than whites, multicultural consumers believe that their cars reflect their personalities. Finally, more Hispanics consider their vehicle to be male than female. And while African Americans are evenly split, more Anglos and Asians consider their vehicle to be female than male.
IMMIGRATION: Hispanics are more inclined to feel that most immigrants coming to the U.S. are doing so illegally. African Americans, on the other hand, are the most concerned about illegal aliens and are the most prone to want a call to action: they are the most likely to feel that the federal government should crack down on illegal aliens and should strictly limit legal immigration.
Hmm, while I'm between cars right now, I did give a name to my last hoopty -- a grey-on-grey Honda Accord sedan that I called "The Silver Bullet." But that's because it had a hole in the quarter-panel that looked, seriously, like a bullet hole. It was a used car I bought for a song when I was a student and -- knowing nothing about the previous owner -- anything's possible.

Fears over rice genome access
(New Scientist)

We have to weigh the benefit of publishing some data so that it is in the public domain or having it all deposited as privately held trade secrets. These people "discover" what already in nature, and then have the audacity to consider making it proprietary and hoard the knowledge. Why is the world such a messed up place? Men like these can give you some insight.

Sex and What City?
(AlterNet)
-
The answer to these and other similar questions is No, of course, as anyone who is as devoted as I to Sex and the City will know. It is a show without blacks, without Hispanics, without Asians (except the occasional appearance by Margaret Cho), without foreigners and, most significantly for this little Semite, it's a show about New York City taking place in New York City and it's got no Jews.BoyCaught would like to take this moment to point out that in "Sex in the City's" New York, there are also no rats running around, 'bout the site of a large subway sam'ich. And no three-card monty games, no wilding by crazed "ethnic" youth in Central Park, and no Bernie Goetz-isizz on the subway. Where is the verisimilitude up in that muhf*cka?

Three Abreast!

The web-friendly sitcom. We've seen attempts at broadcasting TV-style shows on the Internet before, but the interesting things about this program are that the episodes are generally short, and the unique feature called the "Comedy Extender," which is web reference to many of the bits in the program. Think of Pop-Up Video, but designed for the unique attributes of the Web.

How would you feel if you found out that your child is really the child of another man conceived through an extramarital affair? Well believe it or not, the annual Parentage Report from the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) reported that in 1999, 28R0of men who had their DNA tested were not the biological fathers of the children they were unknowingly raising as their own. In 2000, the rate increased to 30Whoah!

First the med take the Native American's land, and then they have the audacity to festoon their meaningless sports teams with caricatures of people whose only mistake was that they trusted a bunch of strangers when they first met. War Is Now the Cover Story for Making More Terror
(Common Dreams)
-
War is now the cover story for funding a missile defense system. War is the cover story for drilling in the Alaskan refuge. And war is now the cover story for a new nuclear scenario with a doomsday terror of its own.We really ought to be very afraid, not that nukes will actually be used -- a scary proposition for sure -- but that this deepening focus on war will become a permanent excuse to crack down on more and more personal freedoms. On the other hand, some might argue that we were never free to begin with, and that this administration's efforts to become the perfect, democratic totalitarian government only illustrate this point.

Last week, Sarah luxury items, which from now on will be referred to as "Thelma and Louise", proved to be quite the assets for her.Jeff (from "Survivor: Outback") has a guest column on ET Online where he handicaps Survivor, and he promptly takes the opportunity to give Sarah's front-end "enhancements" their proper names. Bravo. He also nails the emergence of race as a storyline. He writes, "We're waiting for Reverend Al and his flock to storm the shore!"

It seems like all the "A-List" webloggers are at this event. Hmmm, makes BoyCaught wonder ... by way of my newfangled comment link below, if you have a weblog and you consider yourself a "person of color" have you ever considered attending this lovefest? It's never entered my thoughts as something I should go to, yet I consider myself part of the weblog "community," by the unvarnished fact that I have a weblog. Am I missing out on something?

Pentagon : Hunt the Boeing!
(L'Asile utopique)
-
As everyone knows, on 11 September, less than an hour after the attack on the World Trade Centre, an airplane collided with the Pentagon. The Associated Press first reported that a booby-trapped truck had caused the explosion. The Pentagon quickly denied this. The official US government version of events still holds. Here's a little game for you: Take a look at these photographs and try to find evidence to corroborate the official version. It's up to you to Hunt the Boeing!

collecting unemployment

"I lost my job today. My direct boss and the human resources representative pulled me into one of three relatively tiny conference rooms and informed me that The Company no longer had any use for me. Essentially, they explained, they didn't like what I had expressed on my website. I got fired because of dooce.com ... Should I lose my job over what I have written on my personal website, especially if I have made sure not to mention specific places, persons, or events by name?"The answer is an emphatic NO! That someone could lose their job over a personal website is pretty sad. Brave new world totalitarianism, or just some uptight business people?
