Fuel economy: Why you're not getting the mpg you expect
(ConsumerReports.org)
-
"For years, automakers have been criticized for producing vehicles that get so-so gas mileage. But as gas prices climb and consumers seek more miles per gallon, it turns out that fuel economy is much worse than it appears--50 percent less on some models...[s]hortfalls in mpg occurred in 90 percent of vehicles we tested."You might want to wait a while before buying that Hummer.

Constance Baker Motley, Civil Rights Trailblazer, Dies at 84
(New York Times)
-
Judge Motley won cases that ended segregation in Memphis restaurants and at whites-only lunch counters in Birmingham, Ala. She fought for King's right to march in Albany, Ga. She played an important role in representing blacks seeking admission to the Universities of Florida, Georgia Alabama and Mississippi and Clemson College in South Carolina. She helped write briefs in the landmark school desegregation case Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 and in later elementary-school integration cases.Judge Motley was a tall, gracious and stately woman whose oft-stated goal was as simple as it was sometimes elusive: dignity for all people.Wow! What a powerhouse in civil rights history. Thurgood Marshall's right-hand woman. And I must admit, that up until now, this is the first time I've heard of her. Shame on me, and my navel-gazing short-attention span. It says something about our society that massive amounts of time and attention are paid to entertainers, athletes, and other so-called "celebrities," who've done nothing truly important, while folks like Judge Motley live in relative obscurity, having accomplished monumental tasks that actually improve our society and culture.

The gap between rich and poor in China has reached dangerous levels and may create social unrest. This is the side of the story about China that we've not been hearing much about. It's nice to know that they're human too, with human problems like greed, poverty, and corruption.

Women are 'put off' hi-tech jobs... but 'turned on' to porn?
(BBC)
-
I couldn't resist connecting these two articles, same coin, different sides, perhaps: in Britain, young women apparently seem less and less interested in IT and high-tech careers, despite all the upside and the obviousness that the world is becoming more tech-oriented every day. But according to UK's New Statesman magazine, more of them are seriously thinking about becoming glamourous porn stars. The field offers opportunities for "people who yearn to be recognised, but have no specific talent..." Well, they may have a few talents, besides their exhibitionism that is. So much for progress, eh?

Police Trapped Thousands in New Orleans
(Workbench blog)
-
As the situation grew steadily worse in New Orleans last week, you might have wondered why people didn't just leave on foot. The Louisiana Superdome is less than two miles from a bridge that leads over the Mississippi River out of the city. The answer: Any crowd that tried to do so was met by suburban police, some of whom fired guns to disperse the group and seized their water. Before my imagination starts going crazy with all the sinister permutations here, and before I completely give in to echo-chamber aspects of the blogosphere, let me make a mental note to add the word "allegedly" to all these claims. But in many ways, this NOLA situation just seems to get worse by the minute, and that spectre of racism is floating just below the surface. A nasty piece of the American underbelly has been exposed by the disaster and it's infected.

Barbara Bush Calls Evacuees Better Off
(NY Times)
-
As President Bush battled criticism over the response to Hurricane Katrina, his mother declared it a success for evacuees who "were underprivileged anyway," saying on Monday that many of the poor people she had seen while touring a Houston relocation site were faring better than before the storm hit.I'm a day late and a dollar short on this one, and I know I really shouldn't talk about someone else's mama, but if his mother is this insensitive, uncompassionate and generally just clueless, then can you really blame The Chimp for his callousness? Better off living in makeshift concentration camps containment centers, sleeping on cots in the middle of stadiums, with thousands of other people? WTF? And to think, I always thought comedians who poked fun at Mrs. Bush's, er, weathered appearance, were just being cruel. I mean, as public figures go, she's an easy target. Well, I guess the joke's on me.

iPhone?
-
I'm still trying to decide whether this a big deal, or just a natural evolution, guaranteed to increase the flow of money out of people's pockets. All I know is that when my phone is on each minute costs me money. So what about a phone that will probably be running constantly? It's not the coolest phone I've ever seen, and having music capabilities defeats the communication purposes of having a mobile phone in the first place, doesn't it? Unless you can talk and listen at the same time. As if annoying ringtones aren't enough, it just seems like this kind of device is a recipe for making you even more irritating to and oblivious of everyone and everything around you, while you pay by the minute for that privilege. Now, the iPod Nano is another story...

Journalist Groups Protest FEMA Ban on Photos of Dead
(Editor & Publisher)
-
Forced to defend what some critics consider its slow response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said on Tuesday it does not want the news media to take photographs of the dead as they are recovered from New Orleans..."It's impossible for me to imagine how you report a story whose subject is death without allowing the public to see images of the subject of the story," Larry Siems of the PEN American Center told Reuters. If FEMA hides the bodies from us, then we, who are not from NOLA and haven't lost loved ones, will suppose that the scope of this tragedy is much smaller than in reality. But can you trust a government that hides the truth, especially a truth within our own borders? I haven't pulled this one out in a while, but it seems appropriate here, Neo: Want to know what the Matrix is? It is the world pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

Rapidly changing technology and the demand for tastier, more nutritious and safer foods are driving a new educational trend that many in the food industry predict will result in new flavors and food products that reach consumers faster.Culinologist? Justice Rehnquist: an oxymoron
(Wikipedia)
-
Here's a resume that paints a real pretty picture, if you're a right-wing extremist bigot:
Chief Justice William Rehnquist will be remembered as a judge who...
- wrote memorandum supporting Plessy v. Ferguson. In Plessy the Court endorsed state supported segregation and established that Jim Crow "separate but equal" principle was constitutional
- wrote a proposed constitutional amendment designed to limit the enforcement of Brown v. Board of education
- wrote memorandum endorsing Texas' "Whites Only" Primaries
- fought passage of ordinance permitting blacks to enter stores and restaurants
- harassed minority voters in Arizona in the 1960s
- owned property containing restrictive covenants barring the sale of his property to nonwhites and Jews
- voted to grant Bob Jones University tax exempt status
With legal friends like these, who needs enemies? Those were just some of the highlights. He was a dissenting voice in Roe vs. Wade. He oversaw the kangaroo-like process and wrote the consenting opinion in the highly dubious Bush-Gore 2000 presidential election recount, paving the way for the incompetent kinder, gentler federal government that's ruining running the world country today. I always thought judges were supposed to be fair and impartial, but how can this guy be seen in that light when he used the law to bludgeon people looking for equal and dignified treatment under the law? His record suggests situational ethics run amok. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. It's really hard to make a case that this man made the world a better place while he was alive, but maybe now it is.

Warrick Dunn's challenge to fellow NFL players
(SI.com)
-
Dunn: "I'm challenging guys on every NFL team, except the Saints, to donate at least $5,000 to help people come back from this catastrophe."Dunn, at 5-foot-9, may be physically small by NFL standards, but he's one of the biggest men in the game. Besides his famous charity where each season he gives dozens of single mothers their first home -- in honor of his late mother -- you just have to admire a celebrity who talks it and walks it. Unfortunately, I don't clock NFL-sized dollars with my paycheck, but I'm giving everything that I can spare for the relief effort.

A Can't-Do Government
(New York Times)
-
Krugman: "Before 9/11 the Federal Emergency Management Agency listed the three most likely catastrophic disasters facing America: a terrorist attack on New York, a major earthquake in San Francisco and a hurricane strike on New Orleans...[s]o why were New Orleans and the nation so unprepared?"This tragedy is still unfolding, and everything that can be done needs to be done to help the victims. I'm certainly doing my part, but these kinds of hard questions have to be asked, and they must be answered. It's hard to believe our federal government could be this inept and underprepared, unless it's by design. I mean, come on, you had Dubya himself saying that no one expected the levees to break. Excuse, Mr. President but the Army Corps of Engineers was reinforcing them back in 2003 when you pulled them off the job before they could finish it. Not just government ineptitude, but callousness.
