GateHouse: O hai, internetz-we r fail
(mathewingram.com work blog)
-
GateHouse is mad because the Times (or rather, the Boston Globe, which is owned by the same company) is scraping its headlines and the first paragraph of stories, and then deep-linking to the stories themselves, thereby copying the site's content and stealing its traffic. This sounds like a lawsuit that would have happened in 1995, not 2008. If this is all they've got, then it really is time for old media to curl up and die. Yes, I understood that current economic realities are dismal, but trying to turn back the hands time is just counterproductive and foolish. Can't anyone come up with a new model?

Invading MySpace
(TheRoot.com)
-
My more upwardly mobile friends insist that MySpace reeks of 2005. To me, though, that site functions as a reality touchstone. MySpace feels homey... [t]here's more to the world, she's confirmed, than life as lived on Facebook.Issues of identity as expressed and defined by cyberculture activity is a topic that's starting to interest me.

Last.fm Lay Offs
(paidContent.org)
-
Last night, Last.fm staff in London were celebrating their Christmas party at a venue complete with hot tub. Through today's hangover, they heard about 20 percent are being disposed of as parent CBS Interactive restructures in a cost-cutting move.I understand that in these sudden hard times, businesses have to make painful and necessary staff cuts, but there's something really mean-spirited when you cut people the day after you get them all liquored-up and happy at the office holiday party. 'Oh yeah! Things are fine! We're doing OK! Drink!' and then--BOOM!--drop the bomb on them. It's a business, sure, and if you're running the show, you have to make tough decisions. But you have to f*ck with people's heads too?

Records show how Vick burned through fortune
(Atlanta Journal Constitution)
-
The day he went to jail, Michael Vick bought a $99,000 Mercedes...From Aug. 27, 2007, the day he pleaded guilty in a Richmond federal courthouse, until Nov. 19, the day he bought the new Mercedes before reporting to jail, Vick shelled out $3,627,291.Reading through this list is a stunning display of extravagance and sheer, brutal ignorance. True, Vick came from a poor upbringing, so maybe the concept of financial planning was lost on him, but you have to look for good advisers, after all, you can pay for that kind of guidance and still keep your fortune. Instead, he took wealth that should have set up himself--and his whole family--for generations and apparently tried to spend it all right away. That's what sucks about going from poor to nouveau riche: the minute you get some money in your hands, all you can think to do is spend it. This is a tragic story in its financial aspect.

Calm, Reasoned Analysis Of MySpace, And The Cretins That Flock To It
(BusinessWeek.com)
-
They [meaning News Corp] know they have a huge problem. They're quaking in their boots about MySpace. The problem? Facebook. The comments thread is much more interesting than this blather posing as a 'story.' Isn't that always the case?

Shorter is Better
(Copyblogger)
-
If you want people to read something, make it short and concise.By all means, and let us continue our slide down that slippery slope into illiteracy while we're at it. Yeah, shorter is better is good advice for a blog, but the larger picture is that it's becoming painfully obvious that Johnny--and Jackie, and even Lakeshia--can't read, won't read, and doesn't want to read, unless there are a lot of pictures next to the words. Basically, Johnny doesn't want to think. This will have dire impacts on our future. Time will tell. But at least I read.

Lawsuit: Marketing Blamed in Wal-Mart Trampling Death - Advertising Age
(Advertising Age)
-
Security should have been better, but advertising also helped kill a temporary worker at Wal-Mart, according to a lawsuit filed by the estate and relatives of the 34-year-old man trampled by a pre-dawn Black Friday crowd at a Valley Stream, N.Y., store.I have sincere condolences for the Wal-Mart employee who lost his life in this tragedy, but advertising is not to blame here. According to Hoovers.com, Wal-Mart operates over 7200 stores and employs more that 2 million people, but this unfortunate incident happened at just one location. The fault lies with the people in charge of the local store: they clearly were not ready for the crowd they faced. Something needs to be done for the family of the victim, for sure, but advertising, for all its myriad ills, does not deserve blame in this case. It's not a frivolous lawsuit, but the claim needs to be tuned.

Pirates fire on US cruise ship in hijack attempt
(Yahoo! News)
-
And the brazen attack also raises questions: What was a cruise ship doing in the pirate-infested waters of the Gulf of Aden? How many such targets are sailing these seas, and how can they be protected.Being a pirate is all fun and games when you're watching a Johnny Depp movie, or playing one on Halloween. It gets a little scarier and uncomfortable when gun-toting thugs try to board your luxury pleasure boat under the cover of gun fire.
