Whole Transparent Foods
(Andrew Winston blog)
-
This Mackey story is a new classic demonstrating how hard it is to hide what you do anymore. Anything you write, say, instant message, or send by carrier pidgeon -- no matter how you encode it or hide behind a pseudonym -- has a very good chance of becoming public knowledge. Mackey is in the middle of the proverbial nightmare, "Don't do anything you wouldn't want splashed on the front page of the paper." And he's lived it twice in [one] week.As the two of you know, I've been slowly building up a case for my very non-original "Whole Foods is a harbinger for gentrification, class and social warfare" microtheory, so I've been following this former-young-1960s-rebel-turned-profit-driven-mercenary CEO --Mackey-- for a while. He's not hard to find; he's been saturating the business media for a while now. I thought this blogger (Winston) had a brilliant take on the situation now facing all contemporary business leaders. It was just perfect. These people are living in glass houses, but by their actions, it's clear that very few realize just how transparent are their corporate experiences. When the truth eventually gets exposed, it all leads to nothing but trouble, shame, and falling stock prices.

Review: Transformers
-
I thought this movie was a loud, noisy mess. I thought it was bloated with special effects that grew old after a while -- I mean, how many times do we see the same swirling cloud of metal shards in this flick? CG is killing the art of storytelling. Of course, I had low expectations going in, and I wasn't pleasantly surprised by what I saw. I was a teenager when The Transformers cartoon show was on air, but it was never one of my favorites, probably because the essential storyline was cheesy to begin with. This movie does nothing to de-cheese the source material. And even though Michael Bay was directing this, leading me to expect that signature loudness and noisiness that is characteristic of his films, I had higher hopes because Steven Spielberg was contributing from the executive producer's chair. But alack, there is no magic here. No humanity either. Just spinning metal and cool CG special effects that grow tiring about halfway through the film. Refund please.

If you do start a blog despite my advice, at least screen your postings: wait an hour or two, then reread your comments and avoid uploading any that are average or poor.

Facebook Users vs MySpace Users: We Report, You Decide
(Mashable blog)
-
There's buzz around the blogosphere this week about an opinion essay by Berkeley Ph.D. student Danah Boyd on the class divide between users on Facebook and MySpace. According to Boyd, "The goodie two shoes, jocks, athletes, or other 'good' kids are now going to Facebook" and MySpace is "... home for ... 'burnouts,' 'alternative kids,' 'art fags,' punks, emos, goths, gangstas, queer kids, and other kids who didn't play into the dominant high school popularity paradigm."Thanks for that analysis. So, even cyberspace can't protect you from cliques, and no matter where you go, there you are... still in high school.
