Digital Dark Age May Doom Some Data
(Tech News Watch)
-
The concern for archivists and information scientists like McDonough is that, with ever-shifting platforms and file formats, much of the data we produce today could eventually fall into a black hole of inaccessibility. "If we can't keep todays information alive for future generations," McDonough said, "we will lose a lot of our culture."Maybe it pays to print out those emails every so often. Or maybe there's a lot of stuff out there that's simply not worth holding onto in the first place.

Terrorist 'tweets'? US Army warns of Twitter dangers
(Infowars)
-
A chapter on "Potential for Terrorist Use of Twitter" notes that Twitter members sent out messages, known as "Tweets," reporting the July Los Angeles earthquake faster than news outlets and activists at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis used it to provide information on police movements. But what will terrorists do when they get a Fail Whale, switch to identi.ca?

Holiday shopping tip: do not give gift cards!
(Financial Aid Podcast)
-
The catch is this--gift cards are not cash. Gift cards are actually a form of debt issued by the company, just like a corporate bond. This means that if a company goes bankrupt and is able to release itself from obligations including debt and bond holders, the gift card is immediately null and void.

Quitting FriendFeed
(rizzn's personal blog)
-
For those who've not been on FriendFeed, wanna know what it's like? It's like Slashdot, but without the critical thinking. It's like Digg, but with a better vocabulary. It's like 4chan, but without the criminal record. It's like the comments on LittleGreenFootballs during the Rathergate scandal, but without the research. Simply put, it's a bunch of really smart people who generally feel they're too smart to go out and back up what they have to say with facts.Wow, that's a trenchant overview of FriendFeed, a bit over-the-top and inaccurate from my experience, however. Personally, as someone who's been on the InterWeb since about 1994, I've seen it all. The thing I've grown most weary of are people who have to "announce" that they're quitting a service, or blogging, or contributing. Why not just pull the plug and be done with it? Why does anyone need the self-important explanations and parting shots? I just don't get it? While you may have contributed to the conversation at some point, that's all it is: a conversation. And in a world of six billion people, you're just one voice. Maybe in the 'real world' you're important, but in cyberspace, you're just one voice. Please, everyone, get over yourself.

Black man dragged to death 200 miles from site of Byrd murder 10 years ago
(Boing Boing blog)
-
Brandon McClelland, 24, was dragged to death beneath a truck driven by two white men in Paris, Texas last month. McClelland was black. The site of his death is just 200 miles away from the location where James Byrd was murdered in a similar manner ten years ago. While the growing wave of Obama-mania can make some of us hopeful, it's important to remember this is still America, and America still has a race problem, especially if you're black. The election of one man isn't going to change that, nor is it going to erase ugly and grotesque history that should never be forgotten, if things are to change for the better.

14 things to do if you are laid off from a tech job
(Webware/CNET)

Geeks and other tech employees are a little different from the vanilla workforce, though, so I wanted to put together a list of specific things that people in our part of the economy might want to consider if they're let go. Here's the rundown.

Vote Obama or McCain: Global Electoral College

If Obama doesn't win, the world will think we're idiots!

The Choice
(The New Yorker)
-
The Republican disaster begins at home. Even before taking into account whatever fantastically expensive plan eventually emerges to help rescue the financial system from Wall Street's long-running pyramid schemes, the economic and fiscal picture is bleak. During the Bush Administration, the national debt, now approaching ten trillion dollars, has nearly doubled. Next year's federal budget is projected to run a half-trillion-dollar deficit, a precipitous fall from the seven-hundred-billion-dollar surplus that was projected when Bill Clinton left office. Private-sector job creation has been a sixth of what it was under President Clinton. Five million people have fallen into poverty. The number of Americans without health insurance has grown by seven million, while average premiums have nearly doubled. Meanwhile, the principal domestic achievement of the Bush Administration has been to shift the relative burden of taxation from the rich to the rest. For the top one per cent of us, the Bush tax cuts are worth, on average, about a thousand dollars a week; for the bottom fifth, about a dollar and a half. The unfairness will only increase if the painful, yet necessary, effort to rescue the credit markets ends up preventing the rescue of our health-care system, our environment, and our physical, educational, and industrial infrastructure.

Memeorandum Colors: Visualizing Political Bias with Greasemonkey

While most political blogs are extremely partisan, their biases aren't immediately obvious to outsiders like me. I wanted to see, at a glance, how conservative or liberal the blogs were without clicking through to every article.

Government report: Data mining doesn't work well
(CNET News)
-
The most extensive government report to date on whether terrorists can be identified through data mining has yielded an important conclusion: It doesn't really work. But that won't stop the current administration from 'data mining' regular citizens...to what end, other than building a better police state?
