World Conference on Racism
-
The World Conference against racism. And what a wonderful world it would be. BoyCaught feels that this is well-intentioned and all, but human nature being what it is, talk is cheap. Furthermore, the people who benefit from racism have too much to lose to really try and change things. This, my friend, is propaganda at it's finest.

The Lunar Conspiracy. Did Man Really go to the Moon?
-
Have you ever seen a rocket take off, land vertically and then take off again? It was attempted once. In 1996 the Delta rocket DC-X toppled over on landing and exploded. NASA is still trying to find a team of engineers that can get a rocket to land vertically. Strange really, they managed to do this on the Moon twenty-seven years earlier. What? BoyCaught remembers OJ Simpson in Capricorn One, way back in the day. It's got to be a joke.

Propaganda Analysis
-
Every day we are bombarded with one persuasive communication after another. These appeals persuade not through the give-and-take of argument and debate, but through the manipulation of symbols and of our most basic human emotions. For better or worse, ours is an age of propaganda.BoyCaught's latest interest keeps coming back to this: propaganda. It's not that we're stuck in The Matrix, it's that the matrix we're stuck in is the relentless environment of messages bombarding us daily. To what purpose? And to whose purpose? Answer for yourself.

Media Determinism
-
Technologists argue that "we are now outgrowing the nation-state and a new form of world order is emerging, a global village, a universal brotherhood or world government on a shrunken planet." Of course such a utopian view is held by only the most optimistic citizens of cyberspace. Anyone who has endeavored to participate in this information revolution knows that its reality is sometimes virtual, and too often "virtue-less." As Clifford Stoll's book title would remind us, there is "Silicon Snake Oil" for sale, and it is available at a price we can not afford to pay. However, the speed at which the Internet is growing prevents us from turning aside. One cannot deny the millions of people who do believe in the Internet-people who have faith in the technology.

My Great Books List
-
Steven Shaviro: Here's my list of the greatest American novels of the second half of the twentieth century. Part of my motivation for doing this is that I believe, contrary to majority opinion, that the second half of the twentieth century was a better time for American fiction than the first half.Shaviro is an English professor at the University of Washington. His list is pretty eclectic, and interestingly enough, loaded with more than a handful of excellent, and criminally under-read, African American writers: Octavia Butler, Ralph Ellison, Chester Himes, Samuel Delany, Donald Goines, Ishmael Reed. These aren't the kind of names you'll see on the New York Times Bestseller List. (found b/w Alamut)

Who Would You Kill? is the most important website ever. What began as a silly game to pass time on long road trips has achieved a level of global popularity on the Internet rivalled only by sites that pander to prurient interests, broadcasting live events, such as births and teenage cherry-poppers.Uh, yeah. Okay.

Why Whites Think Blacks Have No Problems
(AlterNet)
-
75 percent of whites in one recent poll indicated that they had multiple close black friends. Sounds great, until you realize that 75 percent of white Americans represents about 145 million people. 145 million who say they have multiple black friends, despite the fact that there are only 35 million black people to go around. Which means one of two things: either whites are clueless about black people, friendships, or both; or black folks are mighty damned busy, running from white house to white house to white house, being our friends. In which case, we can put away all that nonsense about blacks "taking our jobs." After all, how could blacks have time to work at all, what with all the backyard barbecues they're attending at the houses of their white pals?BoyCaught's take: generally, "clueless" is the answer, but he can't blog today: there's another BBQ to attend in Pleasantville. Read this article, which is full of many, many easily-verified statistics, and then wake up, muhf*cka! And stop expecting that one brutha that you do know to be the ambassador for all people that just happen to have a similar hue.

Banned Books Week: September 22
-
Free People Read Freely. Celebrate Your Freedom to Read. Develop Yourself:Expose Your Mind to a Banned Book. And BoyCaught would like to note, not only is reading fundamental, it's also the gateway to propaganda, if done uncritically. For instance, "Banned Books Week" sounds like a good idea, but good for whom? "Free People Read Freely!" Well, yeah, but what are they trying to be free from? Is that necessary? And so on. Or, you can just take things at face value, and believe everything you read.

The truth about women
(A Fire Inside blog)
-
After perusing them at home for several hours, I have come to several conclusions. And no matter how much anyone, even Justin, tries to dissuade me, I know that Stuff and Maxim have guided me towards the truth that women have known for years but until now really could not prove:
- The perfect girl is a physically flawless, somewhat dumb blonde who likes to call her man things like "sir" and "master" and wears nothing but thongs and wet tshirts all day.
- If you give a man a shiny electronic toy and a perfect pair of tits to play with, he will be happy for hours, if not days.
- You have not proved your true worth to a man until you have performed lesbian sex for him.
- Movies must contain tits, ass, lesbian sex and things that go boom. Fart jokes are an added plus.
- A woman must maintain herself at all times. Men are allowed to get paunchy, bald and shower only ever other day.
(all truths according to heterosexual men)
Hmmmmmmm! Interesting blog, this A Fire Inside.

What are stem cells?
(Howstuffworks)
-
Stem cells are unprogrammed cells in the human body that can be described as "shape shifters." These cells have the ability to change into other types of cells. Stem cells are at the center of a new field of science called regenerative medicine. Because stem cells can become bone, muscle, cartilage and other specialized types of cells, they have the potential to treat many diseases.

Cracking the kernel of prejudice
(Canberra Times)
-
Everyone had a kernel of prejudice inside them. No-one was immune. No human being was born hating blacks or Jews or gay people. Prejudice grew from fear of change - fear of different people and different ways of living. "Bigotry and prejudice are an aspect of us all. Because we're different from one another, because we profess different beliefs, or we've grown up with different skin colours, or within different layers of society,"Dr. Evelyn Scott, the former chair of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation (Australia)

Scientists Defend Human Cloning Plans
(Yahoo! News)
-
Scientists determined to create the world's first cloned babies defended their plans on Tuesday against charges from animal cloning experts that the technology was too dangerous to apply to humansOn one hand, it's hardest to tell smart people that their idea is stupid, especially propeller-heads. There's always the brilliant, but ultimately deluded scientist who thinks by sheer force of his invention, he can save the world and overcome basic human nature... yeah, those fools are *always* misled. But on the other hand, if the only argument against cloning is that it's "too dangerous" then the battle is already over: clones will walk the earth, in your lifetime. Because the "too dangerous" argument means that the focus of the debate has already moved from "should we even dream of doing this" to "we really shouldn't do this until we know everything." The thing is: they never know everything.

How DNA Computers Will Work

DNA might one day be integrated on a computer chip to create a so-called biochip that will push computers even faster. Bush, Aides Revel in Their Successes
(washingtonpost.com)
-
Bush's "changed the tone" words are at odds with the actions of lawmakers on the Hill. A Congressional Quarterly analysis yesterday found that partisanship in Congress hasn't declined, and may have increased. In the Senate, CQ found, "party unity" votes increased to 64.1 percent this year from 48.6 percent in 2000, the highest level of partisanship in the six years CQ reviewed.Apparently, this Administration lives in a world of fantasy and denial.
