Beware the Online Collective
(Edge.org)
-
"In the last few years, though, a new twist has appeared. Along with all the sites that encourage individual expression, we are seeing a flood of schemes that celebrate collective action by huge numbers of bland, anonymous people. A lot of folks love this stuff. My worry is that we're playing with fire... There are a lot of recent examples of collectivity online. There's the Wikipedia, which has absorbed a lot of the energy that used to go into individual, expressive websites, into one bland, master description of reality."Virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier tackles a subject that's bugged me this past year. All of these so-called social networking and Web 2.0 business models we've seen in the last 12 to 18-months -- from MySpace, YouTube, and FaceBook, to WikiPedia and SecondLife -- budding e-businesses centered around the notion that the wisdom of the crowd will always lead to the best answer bug me. Anecdotally we know that groupthink rather than leading to the best of anything, usually offers nothing but pabulum, you know, middle-of-the-road, bland, garbage. But apparently this is all very profitable for some online entrepreneurs right now.

Sex, Violence, Tension and Comic Books (and Video Games)
(Gamasutra)

If you look at the way furors begin and play out, they're very predictable.
Well, violence did occur long before video games ever existed. Long. Before.

Internet Video and how the Broadcast Nets are Missing the HDTV Opportunity
(Blog Maverick)
-
Why in the world are your networks not promoting the hell out of the fact that everything looks better in HD?
HDTV is great. I enjoy HDTV. But other than live sports, there's not much HD content available right now. You can only watch those Discovery Channel specials so many times. Thank goodness for sports.

The Low Point
(Jeremy Allison Column)
-
Let's be clear, these people hate the Internet. If they had a single-use time machine they'd rather use it to go back in time and kill everyone responsible for creating TCP/IP than prevent the Second World War. The movie industry sees what has happened with CDs, looks at the gigabit bandwidth available in Japan and they know they're next. They will do anything to prevent it, pass any law, remove any civil right or fair use provision that gets in their way.

Osama, Obama, And the Evolution of American Racism
(Too Sense blog)
-
The conservative media blitz indicates the way in which the racist vocabulary in America has again evolved. The point is not to convince their audience that Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim, as such charges are easily refuted. No, the point is to remind everyone that Barack Hussein Obama is not white, and therefore cannot be trusted. The race (literally) for power in 2008 is getting off to an ugly start. No surprise. Will be interesting to see how Obama plays this one; it's his first test.

Pork's Dirty Secret: top hog producer, one of America's worst polluters
(RollingStone.com)
-
Smithfield estimates that its total sales will reach $11.4 billion this year. So prodigious is its fecal waste, however, that if the company treated its effluvia as big-city governments do -- even if it came marginally close to that standard -- it would lose money. As told by this story, the scale of pollution from pigs (and pig sh*t) is staggering. Disgusting.

People who cook at home eat better

Young adults who frequently make their own meals have much healthier diets than their peers who never set foot in the kitchen. If a study proves it, then it must be true...until the next study.

They're all protecting some hide
(Los Angeles Times)

PETA would like to offer a lifetime supply of cruelty-free hand cream to any NBA siss ... excuse me, superstar who'd be willing to give the composite ball another shot.... The hand cream comes in a variety of scents, including Filthy Rich Organic (perfect for any overpaid millionaire) and Peaceful Patchouli.Funniest thing I've read all year. PETA calling NBA players overpaid sissies. Brilliant!

Internet fuels rise in number of jailed journalists
(Committee to Protect Journalists)
-
The number of imprisoned journalists whose work appeared primarily on the Web, via e-mail, or in another electronic form has increased each year since CPJ recorded the first jailed Internet writer in its 1997 census. My definition of a journalist: someone who investigates and writes in order to expose the truth. Apparently, that's an offense worthy of prison in many, many parts in the world, and it's only getting worse. People in power can't handle the truth. Actually, you know what, check that: most people can't handle the truth, but people in power have the ability to suppress the truth, especially if less powerful people are transmitting it.

Disposable Email Addresses

Never insert your real email address in a form on the Web. They might spam you or, worse even, give your address to spammers. Use a disposable address instead, and choose from a number of services that offer them.Useful. Spam is so problematic that we -- average users -- need some kind of remedy.

The Biggest Gamble of Your Life (Is College Worth it?)
(Michael Robertson blog)
-
While the data hints at ways for some individuals to improve the odds of a positive financial outcome, half the people attending college should hear the frank counter-intuitive advice, "Don't go to college." ... [but t]his doesn't mean college is a bad choice for everyone.Wow! That's not advice you hear every day, but the financial arguments he makes are compelling. With the cost of education already prohibitively expensive, new and innovative ways of helping people survive and thrive are needed. The world's becoming more hyper-competitive by the second, and "know nothings" are going to have a tough time.

A Whole New Game Ball? N.B.A. Admits Its Mistake

N.B.A. players have been complaining for two months about the new synthetic basketball and the cuts on their fingers it has caused.Same story as always: management never listens to the rank-and-file employees, and it doesn't matter if you're flipping burgers or trying to post-up on Shaq.

Students score well with fantasy football
(ESPN.com)
-
The idea is strikingly simple. Just as in normal fantasy football leagues, Hagen's math students draft a team at the beginning of the fall semester, make trades with classmates, pick different starting lineups each week and compete against one another for total points. But in order for the students to add up their fantasy points each week, they have to first plug their football statistics into mathematical formulas. They can't figure out their total points, or their classmates' points, until they first do the math.

NextBus
-
NextBus information is not a static schedule listing -- it is actual arrival information, updated at regular intervals. Because traffic variations, breakdowns, and day-to-day problems faced by any transit provider can interrupt service, NextBus was designed to keep you on schedule even if your bus or train isn't.All these years riding Muni, and grumbling that I never really knew when these people are going to show up -- because there are no schedules -- and the answer's been right in front of my face for a while. NextBus tracks several of the routes I use every day from the office to CalTrain, so it's immediately valuable! This is the Web at its best.
