Fifty Reasons Not to Vote for Arnold
(AlterNet)
-
What's troubling about all this (besides the fact that we will personally drop-kick the next person who says, writes or ululates the phrase "The Governator") is that people from all across the political spectrum seem to be saying, "What the heck! I'm voting for Arnie!"The thing about "democracy" is that the "people" get to decide. But if the "people" decide to elect this bad actor, maybe it's time for this blogger to get the f*ck out of Cali. This recall, as absurd as it appears, seems to be a dress rehearsal for what we can expect on the national level in 2004. Either people will wake up and snap out of the quasi-fascist wetdream that's been corroding our day-to-day lives for the last three years, or they'll stay asleep, and we'll slide deeper into the abyss.

Black Bloggers: My Posse's Gone Virtual
(Formica (blog))
-
[W]e've somehow created this rather loosely organized network where we link to (mostly) the same people, and read (mostly) the same weblogs. Individually we decided upon the degree to which we'd disclose the details of our personal lives. We create relationships online and off, and by and large, we're a convivial group of geographically, sexually, politically and ideologically diverse individuals who share not only melanin, but a desire to see (ourselves) and be seen (by ourselves and others). There are many communities within the so-called blogosphere, and this is a nice thoughtpiece on one that's more than skin deep, and a lot more diverse than simple pigmentation may suggest. The proof is in the postings. I don't judge someone by the color of their weblog, but by the contents of its characters.

K Street
(HBO)
-
[A]n experimental fusion of reality and fiction--an entertaining, fly-on-the-wall look at government, filmed in and around the corridors of power in Washington. Starring Beltway insiders James Carville, Mary Matalin, Michael Deaver--and a host of political celebrities.I caught the re-run of this on HBO2 tonight, and there's way too much going on here to fully digest after only one installment, but the melding of the real and the unreal is both interesting and disturbing at the same time. Interesting because the show had a very up-to-the-second feel, like it was happening in real time. Disturbing because, with real pols making cameos, it makes you wonder where will the line be drawn between entertainment and straight-up political advertising? And will most viewers be able to make the distinction? And is there a distinction? If it succeeds, beware the copycats. They always said that Washington DC is Hollywood for ugly people. Here we go. More later.

Lewis Breaks Rushing Record
(ESPN.com)
-
The Baltimore Ravens gave Jamal Lewis the football, as promised, and he delivered on a pledge in setting a single-game NFL record with 295 yards rushing. This record is too astounding to comprehend. This guy racked up more fantasy points than my whole team. It's like scoring 100 points in the NBA. Wow!

iTunes for Windows and Mac iSbogus
-
Instead of creating a system that gets virtually all of fans' money directly to artists-- finally possible with the internet-- iTunes takes a big step backwards. This commentary gives a lot of food for thought. I will gladly pay for music I like, and I believe that musicians need to compensated for their efforts, especially if they're truly talented but don't have a "mainstream" appeal. I also love the concept of the iTunes Store: a digital jukebox that lives on your computer. But if the so-called frictionless economy of the Internet isn't making it better for good artists to make a living, then what's the point in my support of yet another pyramid scheme?

ESPN fumbled by hiring Rush Limbaugh
(Workbench b/w SportsFilter)
-
Cadenhead: "I won't be watching a minute of the program until ESPN jettisons the dead weight it brought on with the hiring of Rush Limbaugh."Thanks for the article, the point of which I took to be: hiring Rush Limbaugh is a mistake by ESPN. I couldn't agree more. But I disagree that it's a mistake. Or at least, I don't think it was a tactical mistake. I think it was completely purposeful. This is exactly what um, ESPN, er, ABC, uh ... Disney wants. Controversial people like Rush can only help to boost ratings. And if they're successful enough on ESPN (cable), then Wilbon better start tuning out ABC Monday nights in the fall. Controversy, and controversial people, sells. And who's buying? We are!

Profile of In-Betweener
-
The In-Betweener is a cosmic entity who exists as the synthesis of the major concepts of the universe: life and death, reality and illusion, good and evil logic and emotion, existence and nothingness, god and manAnd so, too is ... the blog, [ caught In between ]: situated somewhere between life and death, and modest attention and pure apathy. And that's talking about me.
