Pakistan's Noriegas: An open letter to US Congressmen/women
(Embassy of India)
-
If one goes purely by economic indicators, Pakistan's economy must be in as bad a shape as that of Russia, or even worse, since Russia has been in receipt of Western and IMF assistance, whereas Pakistan has not been, but (a big and intriguing BUT here, distinguished members of the Congress), the State of Pakistan has been managing to pay all salaries and pensions and the private sector all wages, without defaulting even once.Where does the money come from? From the smuggling of heroin to West Europe, the US and Canada. The US Government might have stopped economic assistance to the worse than rogue State of Pakistan from the tax payers' money, but why should the Noriegas of Pakistan be worried over it when they get billions of dollars from the heroin sale in the US. For every American boy and girl ruined and killed due to his or her addiction to heroin, there is a Pakistani General fattening his Swiss bank account.Repeat after BoyCaught: follow the money. (note: you'll need to scroll down a few screens to find the start of this open letter)

Osama bin Laden's Bush family Business Connections
(The Konformist)
-
"We should revisit the history of BCCI, a bank used by the legendary Palestinian terrorist known as Abu Nidal. BCCI was closely tied to American and Pakistan intelligence. Its clients included the Afghan rebels, and the father of Osama bin Laden. The father of bin Laden named Houston investment broker James R. Bath as his business representative in Texas, right after George W. Bush's father became CIA director in 1976. By 1977, Bath invested $50,000 into junior's first business, Arbusto Energy, while Osama bin Laden would soon become a CIA asset. George W. Bush's FBI director Robert Mueller was part of the Justice Department's questionable investigation of BCCI. (On BCCI, the bin Ladens, and the Bushes, see the books, The Outlaw Bank, A Full Service Bank, and Fortunate Son)."Follow the money. Follow the money. Follow the money, and you may find things that you don't want to believe. That you refuse to believe. That seem like they're right out of the "movies." Problem is, movies have to make some sense.

Fidel Castro:
(Mathaba.net)
-
"Why this obstinate course of starting a complicated and open-endedwar? Why are the American leaders showing such arrogance when theirenormous power gives them the privilege of showing some moderation?... Under no circumstances should those responsible for the brutal attacks against the American people be allowed to go unpunished, if they can be identified. An honorable condition for every country would be that they are tried by an unbiased court of law that would ensure the reliability of the evidence and that justice be done."Talk about falling on deaf ears.

Remember Florida? News Organizations Delay Reporting on Meticulous Presidential 'Recount' in Light of Attacks
([INSIDE])
-
Journalists involved say time is not right to publish results of ballot-by-ballot study of nearly 200,000 disputed 'votes.' In part that's because resources are stretched thin, but another reason is concern that what they find may undercut the legitimacy of the commander in chief.

It's the Oil, Stupid
(AlterNet)
-
What could possibly motivate the propping up of repressive non-democracies like the Saudi and Kuwaiti royal families, or murderous regimes like that of Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran? Or pouring billions into the coffers of Saddam Hussein in the '80s, or even creating the monster that is possibly the mastermind of these attacks, Osama bin Laden, beneficiary of CIA lucre and training? It's the oil, stupid. Once again, America's twin addictions, that of its people to cheap gasoline and its corporations to billions of petro-dollars, has led us right into the proverbial pit. Having learned very little or forgotten a lot in the wake of the oil embargoes of the 1970s, America is as strung out on the fossil-fuel jones as any Bonnie Brae Street junkie is on Mexican tar heroin.BoyCaught thinks this is a nice analysis of the real causes of anti-American sentiment in the region. But oil is probably just part of a larger story. He who controls the world's oil controls the world's economy. With the European Union to start up in earnest in 2002 when the switch is made to a single currency, destabilization in the Middle East-- just a Tomahawk cruise missile hop, skip, and a jump from major European capitals -- will throw a major crimp into the dreams of European global economic hegemony. It's not the oil. It's the money, stupid. Whenever they say it's not about the money, it's about the money. It's always the money. More on this later.

George Bush, Skull & Bones and the New World Order
(New Netizen)
-
On a more practical political level, the Gulf War was a gambit to save the Bush presidency from a mounting pile of domestic financial woes, not the least of which was the savings and loan (S&L) crisis and a pending series of failures of major commercial banks. This long, long piece, written for a Japanese audience, back in 1991, was intended to explain why America fought the Gulf War. It's controversial and probably disinformative in lots of ways. But the look at the parallels to the present situation: son Bush faces a terrible economy and the possible collapse of the airline industry, without which United States cannot be a superpower. His solution, like his father's, made convenient by the WTC attack: war. Though long and nasty at times, this is a good, thought-provoking read; grain of salt, please.

It's official: Jordan to play for Wizards

"I am returning as a player to the game I love," said Jordan, 38 and three years removed from what seemed to be a storybook ending to an unparalleled career. "I am especially excited about the Washington Wizards, and I'm convinced we have the foundation on which to build a playoff-contention team."Somehow, all of the, well, important things are getting overlooked.

Whitewashers: White House shifts media control into high gear
(The Smirking Chimp)
-
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer took a slap at "Politically Incorrect" host Bill Maher, who called U.S. military strikes on faraway targets "cowardly." Fleischer blasted Maher, claiming it was "a terrible thing to say," and didn't stop there, noting "There are reminders to all Americans that they need to watch what they say, watch what they do, and this is not a time for remarks like that; there never is."Freedom of speech ... but watch what you say. Listen up people: the only thing we know for sure about the WTC and Pentagon attacks is a lot of innocent people died. Everything else -- that we hear from the media -- is Bush administration spin doctoring. You can go ahead and believe what they tell you, but don't forget: Dubya become POTUS by way of probable fraud. Have you forgotten, bubbleah?

EXECUTIVE ORDER NUMBER 2001-262
(MyFlorida.com)
-
NOW, THEREFORE, I, JEB BUSH, as Governor of Florida, by virtue of the authority vested in me by Article IV, Section 1(a) of the Florida Constitution ... hereby declare that a state of emergency exists in the State of Florida. I further find that the precautions needed to protect the State from a recurrence of such terrorist acts require a coordination of efforts by a number of agencies. This order was issued on September 11! On the day of the WTC and Pentagon attack, Gov. Bush ordered Florida into a state of martial law ... before New York or DC even had reacted in any official way. The timing's a bit curious, don't you think? (b/w of Ethel the Blog: you may want to look into Ethel, because Baum is collecting a ton of very interesting info on his weblog.)

A Nice Place To Visit
-
The way people seem to be feeling these days, as they struggle to return to "normalcy," reminds BoyCaught of a particular "Twilight Zone" episode. It was entitled, "A Nice Place To Visit," and it was about a small-time gangster who dies and ends up in what he thinks is heaven. In this place, he gets everything he ever wants: money, dames, all the right cards in the poker game, and all the control. And he gets everything with impunity, not even a peep from even the police. There are no police, no one to keep him in line. But in this world, everything comes so easy. Too easy. Then one day, he wakes up and he tells the concierge-type guy who's been showing him around that he feels he is in the wrong place. That it's all a big mistake. He doesn't feel right being here and thinks that maybe he should go to the other place. And then concierge man tells him that this is "the other place."
Maybe this is the other place.

Blowback
-
The twenty-first century, Chalmers Johnson tells us, will be a payback world in which the United States will reap the global resentments it is now sowing. "Blowback," a term invented by the CIA, refers to the unintended consequences of American policies ... Johnson lays out in vivid detail the dangers faced by our overextended empire, which insists on projecting its military power to every corner of the earth and using American capital and markets to force global economic integration on its own terms.BoyCaught picked up this book way back in the summer of 2000. It ended up on the night table -- actually, the floor -- and instead of getting read, it served to prop up all of the web development, SQL, and Java books that are necessary for the daytime job. Seem like now's a good time to start reading this one.

Banned Books Week: September 22
-
For his participation, BoyCaught will re-read Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, a book he first read way back in high school. It seems macabrely appropriate today, because now that our American myth of invulnerability has been shattered, it is a new world. We'll learn soon enough whether or not we will be brave. BNW also portends a totalitarian future that, if you look closely, is coming into focus before our very eyes.

Reason in a Time of Anger
(monkeyfist blog)
-
We are shocked that such destruction could take place in America, not considering that such tragedy has become commonplace for many people in other, less self-possessed places. We are appalled at the blatant disregard for the lives of ordinary people, forgetting the pain inflicted upon other ordinary people by American-backed terror or, worse still, by our own government's hand in the name of our national interests.Don't misunderstand my words or question my loyalties. I love America, and I am appalled by this crime against humanity. I only ask for reason in a time of angerThoughtful words.

Not Broken
-
Earlier, I wrote about how the company I work for, Landor, was asked by the Mayor's office to design a logo for New York's efforts to rebuild itself. The City created a fund, called the Twin Towers Fund, and the "Unbroken" ribbon and wordmark (above) form the symbol that was chosen from amongst several dozen we submitted. It's a small thing, especially when given the enormity of what occured on September 11th, but for a design firm, it's probably the best we can do, as a organization, to help. The story of how this all came together is pretty inspiring; if I get around to it, I'll post the highlights here.
Unbroken is a concept that I like. We've been hit, but we're not down. We feel pain, but we still have our confidence and swagger. The horror of that day has hurt us all, but we are not broken, and we can do something to change things for the better. I just hope we do the right thing.

It wouldnChilling reminder. While all of this jingoism and anti-Arab sentiment is filling a vacuum formed by understandable anger and searing pain, dreams of mass destruction aren't indigenous to any one group of men or boys. They can't see why they are hated
(Guardian Unlimited)
-
Any glimmer of recognition of why people might have been driven to carry out such atrocities, sacrificing their own lives in the process - or why the United States is hated with such bitterness, not only in Arab and Muslim countries, but across the developing world - seems almost entirely absent. Perhaps it is too much to hope that, as rescue workers struggle to pull firefighters from the rubble, any but a small minority might make the connection between what has been visited upon them and what their government has visited upon large parts of the world.Missed this one last week. Someone told BoyCaught that now is not the time to question our government. Now is the time to band together and go and get the *ssholes that did this to us. If now is not the time to consider our role in creating millions of enemies, then when?

Airline Aid Plan Gains; Layoffs Near 86,000

The White House last night presented lawmakers with an $8 billion plan to stabilize the airline industry, hours after American Airlines and United Airlines said they would eliminate a total of 40,000 jobs in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks. It seems like all of the nation's focus is being turned to this so-called "war" effort. WTC wreckage guards buried treasure of COMEX gold
(Yahoo! News)
-
"The bars are still there. Obviously, they are going to be able to dig them out -- unless they melted and disappeared," speculated one dealer at a precious metals trading firm in New York. How do you melt (and evaporate) 12 tonnes of gold? A friend, and I were commenting, off-the-cuff, on some of the similarities between the horrific events and movies we've seen. What struck us was how many people who witnessed the event said, in on-the-street interviews, that "It seemed like being in a movie." So then BoyCaught stumbles across this article, and realizes that this is eerily similar to "Die Hard 3." Of course, a week ago, if someone told you a couple of jetliners would crash into the World Trade Center, you'd never believe that one, either.

Bush, the CIA and the Roots of Terrorism
(AlterNet)

Will we ever get to the point that we realize we will be more secure when the rest of the world isn't living in poverty so we can have nice running shoes? In just eight months, Bush gets the whole world back to hating us again. He withdraws from the Kyoto agreement, walks us out of the Durban conference on racism, insists on restarting the arms race -- you name it and Baby Bush has blown it all.Michael Moore, hitting on all cylinders, thanks. All this from a president elected by fraud. Have we forgotten that fact: this dope, Dubya, didn't win the election. He stole it. If we lie down with rats, we will wake up with maggots.

Hunt, Not Witchhunt, For Terrorists
(AlterNet)
-
Federal investigators had barely begun to sift through the bomb rubble of the Oklahoma City federal building in April, 1995 for physical evidence and clues. They had not interviewed survivors or eyewitnesses. They named no suspects and issued no official statement about motives for the bombing. Yet, an expert on CBS claimed that the bombing had a Middle Eastern trait. The stampede was on.
We've rushed to judgement before. Our country, this great United States, is certainly not without its own sinners and evil men.

Anti-Attack Feds Push Carnivore
(Wired News)
-
Federal police are reportedly increasing Internet surveillance after Tuesday's deadly attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Just hours after three airplanes smashed into the buildings in what some U.S. legislators have dubbed a second Pearl Harbor, FBI agents began to visit Web-based, e-mail firms and network providers, according to engineers at those companies who spoke on condition of anonymity. An administrator at one major network service provider said that FBI agents showed up at his workplace on Tuesday "with a couple of Carnivores, requesting permission to place them in our core, along with offers to actually pay for circuits and costs."Welcome to the real police state.

Why the towers collapsed
(Salon.com)
-
Why did the buildings collapse? According to Gregory Fenves, a professor of Civil Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, the planes weakened the buildings' structures at key points. Fenves, working on information gleaned from preliminary TV reports, stressed that he was speculating. He said that if the planes had hit the structures higher, they could have merely damaged their tops; if they had hit lower, they would have been up against the enormous weight and resistance of the base of the buildings.Staggering evidence that this attack was planned out with scientific precision.

Now is not the time for rash assumptions or finger pointing. Furthermore, while the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon were not thwarted, other attacks may have been, today and in the past. We must now take stock of the lessons learned from this tragedy, and carefully consider where our national security system did and did not work. This is the only sound basis for change in how our democratic government of law fights terrorism.

John Ashcroft's First Six Months at the Justice Department
(People for the American Way)
-
The Right-Wing Dream Team Takes Over
Through a network of right-wing lawyers, government officials, scholars and judges, the Society seeks to fundamentally remake the American legal system. Earlier this year, the organization sponsored a conference called "Rolling Back the New Deal." The leading voices of the Society share an ideology that is hostile to civil rights, reproductive rights, religious liberties, environmental protection, privacy rights, and health and safety standards, and would strip the federal government of the power to enforce these rights and protections. And they are poised to succeed.

Rise of Domestic Terrorism ...
-
...and Its Relation to United States Armed Forces. From the moment a large proportion of the population begin to take his activities seriously, his success is assured. The Government can only intensify its repression, thus making the life of its citizens harder than ever: homes will be broken into, police searches organized, innocent people arrested, and communications broken; police terror will become the order of the day, and there will be more and more political murders - in short a massive political persecution . . . the political situation of the country will become a military situation.

Apparent terrorist attacks hit U.S.
(CNN.com)

Apparent terrorist attacks hit U.S.September 11, 2001 Posted: 10:15 a.m. EDT (1415 GMT) Flames and smoke erupt from the World Trade Center after a second plane crashes into the New York City landmark. NEW YORK (CNN) -- Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan on Tuesday in what President Bush called "an apparent terrorist attack on our country." About an hour after those crashes, an explosion forced the evacuation of the Pentagon in Washington and a fire erupted on the Washington Mall. Another fire was reported at the State Department. The White House and other government buildings were also evacuated. In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated. Witnesses told CNN that a helicopter circled the Pentagon and disappeared on the other side of the building shortly before the explosion and fireball. The Federal Aviation Administration shut down all airports in the country. Bush, in Sarasota, Florida, where he was to speak on education reform, cancelled those plans. "Today we've had a national tragedy," Bush said from Sarasota, Florida, where he had been reading to children at Emma E. Booker Elementary School. He described the incidents as an "apparent terrorist act." The president said he was returning immediately to Washington and had authorized a full investigation to find those responsible.Harrowing imagesShortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday morning a plane smashed into the northern tower of the World Trade Center. About 20 minutes later, the second plane hit the southern tower, the harrowing images transmitted live on television. As television cameras transmitted the aftermath of the first crash, smoke and flames billowing from near the top of the northern tower, the video captured a second plane slamming into the southern tower. The horrific images of the second crash were caught in live video. At about 10 a.m., the south tower disappeared behind

Two Can Play That Game
(Rotten Tomatoes)
-
One review: "Populated by pathetically shallow 'players' of both sexes and very talented actors trapped by their skin color in a tired genre of self-perpetuating stereotypes."BoyCaught saw this movie, and all he can say is: I want my money back. Once again, Rotten Tomatoes proves that the collaboratively-filtered opinion of many pro movie critics is pretty accurate. This movie was rated "rotten," and BoyCaught should have listened. Of course, 90-plus minutes of Viveca Fox is never a bad thing, youknowimsayin?

ASAP! A Stand Against Pop-under ads!
-
There are ways you can block the pop-under ads but those determined to keep forcing their big pop-under ads upon our desktop are busy coming up with workarounds to the blockers ? it's their arrogant attitude toward users that I stand most firmly against ? we shouldn't have to spend our time defending ourselves from their obnoxious attempt to take control of our browsers and desktops.Thanks.

Rappers Make Statement with Confederate Flag
(Miami Herald)
-
The reason for unfurling the rebel symbol lies somewhere between making a controversial political statement and fueling record sales, critics say. For their part, rappers contend that it's all about rebelling against a symbol that has taken the collective black psyche hostage for years. It's about co-opting a painful emblem for blacks and releasing its grip. The argument is similar to the one made for the relentless use of the "n-word" by the hip-hop community; that Blacks' use of it takes away the sting and mocks its original intent.Newsflash: racism isn't going away, not now or anytime soon, and probably never will. Human nature being what it is, most -- but not all -- of the beneficiaries of the system have no real incentive to change it. After all, that would mean competition on a level playing field, and that prospect is just too threatening. This culture is all about the money, so if some African American rappers can profit off of this Confederate bullsh*t that's meant to intimidate and control then -- hell yeah! -- more power to them! Entrepreneurship is a major part of the all-encompassing propaganda known as the "American Way." And are these rappers not Americans? If you prick them, will they not rhyme?

Drink Responsibly
(SF Gate)
-
Networking giant Cisco Systems has put up large, full- color, glossy posters in every break room on every floor of its San Jose campus (which consists of some 40 buildings) admonishing its employees to save money with their drinking and recycling habits. The posters, which read "Drink Frugally" and "Drink Responsibly," relate to the free bottled water, coffee and canned fruit drinks that Cisco provides for its employees.First layoffs. And for the workers left behind, the ones who have to toil even harder now ... no water for you! But these can't be salt mines or plantations fields, massa, we 'um got computas on ours desks. (This article is at the bottom of a piece about the failure of the open-source software movement.)

What Really Matters - Part I
(Choice in Education)
-
(MUST SEE!)-- After 12,000 hours of compulsory training at the hands of nearly 100 government-certified men and women, many high school graduates have no skills to trade for an income or even any skills with which to talk to each other. They can't change a flat, read a book, repair a faucet, install a light, follow directions for the use of a word processor, build a wall, make change reliably, be alone with themselves or keep their marriages together. The situation is considerably worse than journalists have discerned. I know, because I lived in it for 30 years as a teacher. This story just tears BoyCaught's heart out. Education, in contemporary practice, is nothing more than warehousing the young. A pinch of neo-luddite cynicism in here, but some extremely valid, and incredibly sad, points are made. We all better recognize. (b/w RavenX)

Delhi children make play of the net
(BBC News)
-
Children in the slum were intrigued by the icons on the computer, and completely without any help, gradually figured out how to use the computers and access the internet. "What they would see is the opening screen of MSN.com ...BoyCaught's first reaction: "Oh great, now Microsoft is going to go after the world's poorest people, and turn them into clones." Then it occured to him that the biggest problem with this story is that a seed is being planted which says: "Look, you don't need to provide no stinkin' public education; the kids will eventually figure out their niche in society anyway." That's a scary, but deserves some more thought. Stay tuned. (b/w Robot Wisdom)

I, Cringely

"I, Cringely" is a collaborative effort between Robert X. Cringely, PBS Online and Oregon Public Broadcasting. The views expressed in "I, Cringely" are the heartfelt feelings of Robert X. Cringely, and should be taken as such. That is why this column is called, "I, Cringely."BoyCaught's a little late to this one, as usual -- by hey, he's flowing to his own riddim -- but this guy has some pretty insightful takes on technology. It's the new religion. Haven't you heard?

Exposed: secret plot to start race riots
(Guardian Unlimited Observer)
-
The existence of the club, which ostensibly will offer 'cultural tours' of towns and cities, means NF [National Front] groups will not have to tell local police about their intentions to arrive in a town. 'By the time they know we are in an area, it will be too late to stop us,' said one extremist. And I say to myself, "What a wonderful world."

Little League Team's Wins Nullified
(Yahoo! News)
-
The boy who dominated the Little League World Series with his 70 mph fastballs was ruled ineligible Friday after government records experts determined he actually is 14, and that birth certificates showing he was two years younger were false.BoyCaught, who is childless to date, hears all of this talk about "we need to protect the children," and "children are our future," blah blah blah. But more and more, all he sees are people exploiting children for their own devious ends. Most parents probably aren't hypocrites, but do you think the kids are blind to what's going on around them?

Why Bridge Jumper Was Taunted
(ABCNEWS.com)
-
"Jump, bitch, jump!" is what she heard from the crowd of motorists at the scene. Other onlookers cursed the woman, who was distraught over a relationship. After all, she had delayed their daily commute. Such behavior occurs quite naturally to us in certain situations. Psychologists have a name for it: deindividuation. Being part of a large group will often lead to behavior that, under normal circumstances, is not socially acceptable. As BoyCaught has always believed: it's never good to be part of the crowd.
