Relationship Algebra
(Blame Canada blog)
-
I know I've heard this one before, and actually, money is the root of all evil, so by this algebra, that would make women evil, but that's not necessarily true... unless you're talking about ex-girlfriends and ex-wives.

Typepad: The Ups & Downs of a Successful Service
-
This story about the weblog service Typepad's growing pains is, in my opinion, a sign of the problems to come with the Web going forward. If the idea, the Web 2.0 thang, is that a proliferation of these services, some free, some for a fee, will ultimately host all your blogs and E-mails, and your photos, your videos, your calendars, your to-do lists, etc., then sooner or later, these services will inevitably run into scalability problems. The day everyone has a blog is not going to be pretty, even if we have universal broadband access. One of the reasons my weblog is completely handmade, and run on my own server, is because I learned, through my early experiences with Pitas.com, and then Blogger.com, that I value my data more than the hosting service does. If no one else cares about my stuff, at least I do. And can I really trust my bits to a service whose main concern is to grow their business above all else? Hey, I'm not saying the people running these services are bad people, but these operations have real limitations that we'll quickly reach as more and more folks start taking advantage. And as these services become easier to use, more people are going to pour their thoughts and images and sounds into these digital Titanics, but when these services crash - and it's guaranteed they will, because machines do break -- where will all of those labors of love, those memories go? Perhaps lost forever, like tears in the rain.

Attack of the Blogs
(Forbes.com)
-
Web logs are the prized platform of an online lynch mob spouting liberty but spewing lies, libel and invective. Their potent allies in this pursuit include Google and Yahoo.Oh man, this article is really going to scare a lot of people, especially the suits, about blogging. Personally, I think it's a little over-the-top, taking a handful of cases and blowing things far, far out of proportion. Are blogs a threat, in a whistle-blower sense, to smug corporate and government entities who try to cover up malignant deeds and activities? Absolutely, and that's how it should be. Discounting the real echo-chamber nature of the blogosphere, to imply that all blogs are bad simply because a tiny fraction of people, some of them dishonest, use their sites malaciously (i.e. prized platform of an online lynch mob spouting liberty but spewing lies) seems more like Chicken Little screaming that the sky is falling! And of course, now that battle lines are being drawn, there's going to be a legal price to pay. I guess that very soon the only safe blogging will be to write about your dog, or the lint you found in your pocket. Interesting advice Forbes provides on how corporations can fight back against these killer blogs. So, we've come to this: the Internet is now a battlefield. (Registration required, or just bugmenot)

Powerful Government Accounting Office report confirms key 2004 stolen election findings
(The Free Press)
-
The GAO findings are particularly damning when set in the context of an election run in Ohio by a Secretary of State simultaneously working as co-chair of the Bush-Cheney campaign. Far from what election theft skeptics have long asserted, the GAO findings confirm that the electronic network on which 800,000 Ohio votes were cast was vulnerable enough to allow a a tiny handful of operatives - or less - to turn the whole vote count using personal computers operating on relatively simple software.Bush won Ohio by a mere 118,000 votes, and captured enough electoral votes in that state to get re-elected. Why isn't our lapdog mainstream media covering this?

Amex Sues CEO Over $241,000 Topless Bill
(Yahoo! News)
-
[H]igh rollers visiting Scores' super elite Presidents' Club spend thousands of dollars on single bottles of champagne and tip strippers as much as $10,000 for lap dances and for spending time with them.I love that part: As much as $10,000 for lap dances and spending time with them. Spending time with them? For nearly a quarter-of-a-million bucks, they might as well just get married to these hos. Oh, wait, I forgot. These upstanding businessmen are married; that's why they're hanging out at the club in the first place. And they said the Minnesota Vikings went over the top. Oh brother.

Mrs Bush says gang tattoos hinder job prospects
(Yahoo! News)

First lady Laura Bush said on Tuesday that young people are more likely to get jobs if they avoid tattoos, as well as drugs and alcohol.I know there's got to be a punchline somewhere in there. But Lady Bush has a long way to go before she can top some of the dumbest things Dubya's said in public.

No Longer Safe for Work: Blogs
(Wired News)
-
Security filters set up to block access to -- among other things -- any website that contains the phrase 'blog' in the URL.I have to pause for a second before bringing up the increasing pychological similarities between day-to-day living in 2005 and The Matrix - the first installment of the trilogy, the good one - but the more we see Net-enabled social software technologies such as blogs and file-sharing schemes proliferate, the more we see big entities such as governments and corporations (who may in fact be the true governments) do everything they can to either deny people full access, or co-opt these systems by hostile takeover and financial acquisition. Only when these entities control the technologies, and can impose grossly asymmetric, top-down relationships where they dictate everything is the technology considered safe for the masses. But, of course, by that time, all of the value to individuals - the teeth - are gone, and you have yet another corporate pipeline for the pabulum, banality, and pseudo-reality that substitute for life today, like TV, like radio. And the gridlines of the mesh/matrix get tighter and tighter. The thought of individuals, participating in truly independent and/or collaborative activities not dictated by some self-appointed human authority is problematic to the owners of our ersatz society. This is sure not a free world. Neo's automated agent menace Smith couldn't exist without controlling the system. In our world, neither can BigCos and BigGovs. It's about control and the world pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth. Hat tip to Laosan at Na Han.

Rosa Parks
(Achievement.org)
-
"I do the very best I can to look upon life with optimism and hope and looking forward to a better day, but I don't think there is anything such as complete happiness. It pains me that there is still a lot of Klan activity and racism. I think when you say you're happy, you have everything that you need and everything that you want, and nothing more to wish for. I haven't reached that stage yet."Her simple act of civil disobedience in 1955 sparked a chain of a events that changed America, well, at least on the surface — and we're all about appearances and superficialities in this land. As Ms. Parks said herself, she still wasn't happy living in America. Neither am I. She was 92 years old.

NBA Dress Code
(Blog Maverick)
-
Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks: "The Dress Code is a response to symptoms of bigger problems. The simplistic views people have of our players, is in response to our own stupidity in how we cover and report our games. On a macro level."The world's second-most outspoken sports team owner actually makes a few good points about this NBA dress code situation. And believe me, I rather hear from him than from any of the players, who are just giving us ignorant, knee-jerk reactions -- the kind of reactions that make you think, hmmm, maybe these kids do need a little discipline. But the truth is that Corporate America, who has no problem exploiting (mostly) young Black athletes to sell their sneakers, soda pops and videogames, is really uncomfortable dealing with these same people on a personal level. And I guess, somehow, if they got the ballers to wear suits that would make it a little easier when they actually have to meet face to face. Yeah, right.

Hippo Water Roller
-
Millions of people worldwide are forced to walk long distances on a daily basis to collect their water requirements for the day. The Hippo Water Roller was specifically designed to alleviate the suffering caused by a lack of access to water. The Hippo Water Roller is a barrel-shaped container designed to transport 90 liters (20 gallons) of water.Very cool invention. Here in the States we take access to clean water for granted. This innovation can improve lives.

Wal-Mart Sex Oil Sales Skyrocket
(AdAge.com)

It turns out getting frisky with value-added lubricants is fast becoming as American as apple pie. Johnson & Johnson has found warming lubricants sell well not only for Valentine's Day but also around Memorial Day and Fourth of July. [They] dubbed these sex holidays. And [they] try to line up all our promotional efforts around them. This a great lesson in propaganda advertising: change the message from "sexy fun" to "enhanced intimacy between committed partners" and suddenly average middle Americans can get as freaky as a bunch of Minnesota Vikings on a party boat. A neo-Nazi group's scheduled march against "black crime" in Toledo, Ohio, sparked rioting Saturday afternoon. And of course, police arrested people from the community, and not the goose-stepping clowns who incited the entire situation in the first place: "When police arrived, they used pepper spray on counter-demonstrators and shot tear gas containers into the crowd."

A wide world of sports fans
(Philly.com)
-
'China will someday be a larger market for the NBA than the United States,' predicted Adam Silver, president of NBA Entertainment. China's potential as a source of future sports fans 'is the elephant standing in the room,' said ex-Eagles tight end Chad Lewis, who recently traveled to China for the NFL. 'It's got to be recognized. And I think it is being recognized.' The first live Super Bowl telecast in China in 2003 was seen by three million people. A year later, the audience jumped to 12 million. This year's game between the Eagles and the New England Patriots attracted 20 million viewers. It's a good thing that the expanding corporate backdrop of professional sports isn't ruining the integrity of the games. Yeah, right. (Registration required, or use bugmenot.)

Blogging Prof Fails To Heed His Own Advice
(NY Sun)
-
"The pertinent question for bloggers is simply, Why?" the scholar wrote. "What is the purpose of broadcasting one's unfiltered thoughts to the whole wired world?"A tenure-track college professor blogs, and then is denied tenure and loses his job. Connection? Maybe. Maybe not. But it's becoming more and more clear, in many spheres, that to publicize your opinion is risky. I have a question about that: if people aren't free to speak, then do they really live in a free society?

ARE Blacks A Criminal Race? Surprising Statistics
(HuffPo)
-
Van Jones: "The better question for public debate is this: do the actual government statistics bear out the claim that Blacks contribute disproportionately to the crime rate? Or is this largely a stereotype, which is driven by the disproportionate rate of ARRESTS and CONVICTIONS of Black people? And does the over-focus on Black crime conceal an alarmingly high crime rate within the white population?"Skip the story and check the stats, which conclude: the justice system is a meat-grinder for Blacks, and disproportionally soft on white crime. And just who runs the justice system? That's the topic for an upcoming post.

SUV Sales Plunge; GM is down 50%
(AdAge.com)
-
Soaring Gasoline Costs Devastate Market: Sport-utility-vehicle drivers will spend $920 more this year for gas than they did in 2004, according to figures released today from the Alliance to Save Energy, disastrous news for automakers that saw SUV sales plunge 33% in September.Maybe the silver-lining in the skyrocketing price of gas is that people will go back to driving reasonably-sized automobiles, leading to less pollution, and less fatal accidents. Maybe the problem with gas is that it was too cheap, and people abused it by buying ridiculously wasteful vehicles, and driving too much, simply because they could, and now the market is being corrected. Once, I had a neighbor who used to get into his car, and drive two blocks to a 7-11 just around the corner to get a soda: that's what I'd call an example of driving too much. A higher price of gas may force some extravagant behaviors to be modified. I don't own a car, so I can throw stones.

Jon Stewart disses magazine editors
(AdAge.com)
-
Among those who disagreed, Mr. Carter [editor of Vanity Fair] noted that print media sets much of the TV news agenda every day, but Mr. Stewart was ready. "I didn't say you don't have your place," he said. "It's at the children's table."I think that's called irony. But what's really funny is that Stewart was on a panel called "Laughing Matters: Magazines Celebrate Humor," and his fellow panelists were the editors of Time, Vanity Fair, and Cosmopolitan. When I think funny ha-ha I'm not thinking Cosmo, unless it's Cosmo Kramer, Seinfeld's hipster dufus next-door neighbor.

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
(Foreign Policy)
-
Albert Einstein claimed he never thought of the future. "It comes soon enough," he said. FOREIGN POLICY decided to not grant 16 leading thinkers that luxury. Instead, to mark our 35th anniversary, we asked them to speculate on the ideas, values, and institutions the world takes for granted that may disappear in the next 35 years. Here's a short list: anonymity, monogamy, and the public domain. In fact, on the monagamy topic, I found what I believe is a perfect quote: "Nothing forbids a person from being in love with a few people at the same time." Amen to that.
