Typepad: The Ups & Downs of a Successful Service
-
This story about the weblog service Typepad's growing pains is, in my opinion, a sign of the problems to come with the Web going forward. If the idea, the Web 2.0 thang, is that a proliferation of these services, some free, some for a fee, will ultimately host all your blogs and E-mails, and your photos, your videos, your calendars, your to-do lists, etc., then sooner or later, these services will inevitably run into scalability problems. The day everyone has a blog is not going to be pretty, even if we have universal broadband access. One of the reasons my weblog is completely handmade, and run on my own server, is because I learned, through my early experiences with Pitas.com, and then Blogger.com, that I value my data more than the hosting service does. If no one else cares about my stuff, at least I do. And can I really trust my bits to a service whose main concern is to grow their business above all else? Hey, I'm not saying the people running these services are bad people, but these operations have real limitations that we'll quickly reach as more and more folks start taking advantage. And as these services become easier to use, more people are going to pour their thoughts and images and sounds into these digital Titanics, but when these services crash - and it's guaranteed they will, because machines do break -- where will all of those labors of love, those memories go? Perhaps lost forever, like tears in the rain.
