What I could be doing right now, according to email received this morning...
(kottke.org)
-
What I could be doing right now, according to email received this morning...I smell a meme, and since I'm so inundated by E-mail, I'll play along. According to the E-mail I received today, I could be:
- Learning how to get into paysites for free
- Getting paid for things I do on the Internet everyday
- Getting a 4% mortgage rate right now (the house can come later)
- Finding out what my life insurance CO doesn't want me to know
- Logging on the Net's FIRST No Charge Adult Megasite
- Letting doctors help me write my own Prescripitions (oh yeah, better check that one out)
- Cutting my debt in half
- Securing No-Cost Loan Applications for my Auto! No Commitment!
- Getting another dose of money
- Adding 3-4 inches, guaranteed!

Jackson, Sharpton Criticize 'Barbershop'
(Salon.com)
-
When 26-year-old Steve Reali Robinson watched a cantankerous old barber deride Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks in the hit comedy "Barbershop," he just laughed along with other moviegoers. But the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton weren't smiling. They demanded an apology and called on MGM to remove the scenes from future releases. The flap over the popular movie has exposed a generational rift between civil rights activists and younger blacks who have no memory of the days of bus boycotts, freedom rides and lunch counter sit-ins, some scholars say. "You have some individuals from the civil rights movement, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who are utterly offended that some of their icons have been criticized."That Jackson and Sharpton chose to address this "issue" in the media -- instead of going directly to the directors, and perhaps the star, Ice Cube, first brings their motivations into question, and ironically, can only increase interest in the film. Stick a fork in these clowns ... they're through.

Police: Moss used car to bump traffic control agent
(ESPN)
-
The 27-year-old agent stepped in front of Moss to stop him from making an illegal turn in downtown Minneapolis, and Moss used his 2002 Lexus to slowly push the officer a half-block along the street, stopping when she fell to the ground. There's not enough ways to describe how foolish Randy Moss is. So I won't. Let the facts speak for themselves.

Reporters Find New Outlet, and Concerns, in Web Logs
(New York Times)
-
[N]ews media companies may be opening themselves to questions of liability when they set up Web logs on their sites. "You start getting into the question of, is this part of the paper or not?" said Jane E. Kirtley, a professor of media ethics and law at the University of Minnesota. "If I'm a lawyer advising a news organization, the idea of a Web log like this would just make me break out in hives." Once a news media company edits a Web log, not only does it possibly damage the spontaneity, it also becomes responsible for the content, Professor Kirtley said.Funny thing about lawyers, as soon as they show up, you know the party's over. Valenti presents Hollywood's side of the technology story
(SiliconValley.com)
-
Dan Gillmor: "So while I don't agree with much of what he said -- and I'll respond in a subsequent column -- it's only fair to give you his side of the argument.Everything flows from the principle that Hollywood wants to make its customers happy, and the Internet could be one of the greatest vehicles for making people happy, said Valenti, who in person is exceedingly polite and charming."

In Japanese schools, disorder spreads
(International Herald Tribune)
-
The spreading disorder in Japan's schools may pale compared with the woes of underprivileged schools in American cities. But coming on top of Japan's economic stagnation, the crisis known here as "classroom collapse" is the latest insult to the pride of a society that a little more than a decade ago thought it had pretty much everything figured out.So, all over the world, we're getting more and more unruly kids with slacker-type personalities, getting dumber and dumber. All of this will only lead to one thing: even more unruly kids, who are even dumber.

Fear of Whitey
(Willamette Week Online)
-
David Walker: "As most Americans tried to sleep on Sept. 11, 2001, they were gripped by a wave of fear of "being in the wrong place at the wrong time." ... African Americans have existed within a climate of fear since we were first brought over in shackles ... In this country, blacks are four times more likely to be shot and killed by the police than whites. That's why a terrorist with a boarding pass worries me far less than an overzealous cop with an itchy trigger finger, who mistakes the Audiovox cell phone I wear on my belt for a 9mm automatic."Yeah, what he said. In fact, right now I'm reading a riveting, and truly disturbing history of lynching in America -
At the Hands of Persons Unknown. What you don't know can not only hurt you, it can kill you.

Jesse and King Herod
(WorldNetDaily)
-
WND: The Associated Press quotes the Rev. Jesse Jackson as comparing President Bush's foreign policy to King Herod's. But you, Ari, told us that when Jesse was caught paying extensive money to get his impregnated mistress out of Chicago, the president telephoned him to say, "You are in my prayers", with no such prayers for other clergy adulterers such as Jim Bakker or Jimmy Swaggart. My question is, does the White House have anything by way of response to the King Herod charge? Or do you think that Jesse's failure to attract more than 600 to a 15,000-seat arena at Michigan State University illustrates how discredited he is? (Laughter.) FLEISCHER: Les, the White House ... WND: Could I just get a chance without the cackle? FLEISCHER: The White House is not aware of any recent statements by King Herod. (Laughter.)

NFL thwarts Manning in attempt to honor Unitas
(ESPN.com)
-
Chris Mortenson: "Ravens QB Chris Redman did what Colts QB Peyton Manning wanted to do, but Redman's black high-top cleats won't cost him nearly as much as it would have Manning. Redman probably faces a first-time uniform violation of $5,000 for wearing black high-tops in Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in salute to Johnny Unitas, who died of a heart attack last week."This is why I don't watch football games on TV anymore -- I just watch the highlight shows on ESPN and HBO. The NFL is slowly squeezing all the life and color out of the game as it continues to morph into a corporate marketing colossus. How is it going to hurt the game if, for just one game, one of its best young QBs wears black shoes as a tribute to one of its best QBs of all time?

Barbershop
(Rotten Tomatoes)
-
Barbershop is a smart comedy about a day in the life of a barbershop on the south side of Chicago. So I caught this movie the other day. It was a nice melodramedy. From the marketing, which featured a lot of Cedric the Entertainer facetime, you'd think the movie was going to be another laff-riot, like Undercover Brother, but it actually was less comedy and more story. I liked it because I can definitely relate to the whole barbershop experience. This is the movie's strength and also its weakness: it's a small movie, and it's only going to have limited appeal. When it tries to speak some universal truths about being true to your community, the message gets muddled. Go and see it soon, because it won't be in theaters long. It's a nice little film, but it won't be a moneymaker.

Bush planned Iraq 'regime change' before becoming President
(Sunday Herald)
-
A SECRET blueprint for US global domination reveals that President Bush and his cabinet were planning a premeditated attack on Iraq to secure 'regime change' even before he took power in January 2001.The blueprint, uncovered by the Sunday Herald, for the creation of a 'global Pax Americana' was drawn up for Dick Cheney (now vice- president), Donald Rumsfeld (defence secretary), Paul Wolfowitz (Rumsfeld's deputy), George W Bush's younger brother Jeb and Lewis Libby (Cheney's chief of staff). The document, entitled Rebuilding America's Defences: Strategies, Forces And Resources For A New Century, was written in September 2000 by the neo-conservative think-tank Project for the New American Century (PNAC).New World Order conspiracy theorists ... start your engines.

Terror Threat Raised to Orange
(ABCNEWS.com)
-
The Bush administration today elevated the color-coded terrorist threat level from yellow to orange -- the next-to-highest alert level -- and warned of a high risk of terrorist attacks in the coming days. "We are now at high risk of a terrorist attack," said Director of Homeland Security Tom Ridge. "Be alert but defiant in the face of this new threat," he said.
Do these vague announcements help make the "homeland" feel more security, or does they just add to a brewing sense of hysteria?

Uncertainties Abound in Pinpointing the Real Enemy
(Common Dreams)
-
A year after the 9/11 attacks on the United States, we know remarkably little about the attackers, or about who really organized the complex operation that seems well beyond the capabilities of amateur terrorists. "There will be no peace in America," bin Laden warned, "until there is peace in Palestine." These frightening words were never widely reported in the North American media, which is filled with uninformed commentators explaining why Muslims are inherently bloodthirsty or anti-western.Since we haven't caught the perpetrators of the 9-11 attacks, we still don't know what their motives were. But the Bush Administration's strategy has been even less clear.

weblog ethics
(the weblog handbook by rebecca blood)
-
"There has been almost no talk about ethics in the weblog universe: Mavericks are notoriously resistant to being told what to do. But I would propose a set of six rules that I think form a basis of ethical behavior for online publishers of all kinds."I like these suggestions. Having generally accepted principles to shoot for aren't necessarily restrictive and could, in fact, raise the quality level of all boats on the weblog waters, mixed metaphors notwithstanding.

In Public Opinion, U.S., Europe More United Than Apart
(washingtonpost.com)
-
Substantial majorities in both the United States and Europe say they believe the United States should invade Iraq only with U.N. approval and the support of U.S. allies, according to the survey, which was conducted in June. It also found that large majorities of Americans and Europeans hold similar views about international terrorism, Islamic fundamentalism and the use of military force to deal with such threats, actual and potential. "Despite all the talk about disagreements, there's an impressive amount of convergence on how Europeans and Americans view the world."Yes, but which kinds of Americans are in agreement? African Americans? Arab Americans? Native Americans? Asian Americans? Or just European Americans? All this proves is that propaganda really works. Relentlessly drub

Accessible Web Sites
(dive into mark)
-
Web sites that can be used by people with disabilities are accessible. Web sites that work in older browsers are not accessible; they are backward compatible. Web sites that are easy to navigate are not accessible; they are usable. Web sites that are easy for developers to program are not accessible; they are maintainable. Web sites that are a joy to read are not accessible; they are simply well-written. All of these things are important, but they are not accessibility.Good definitions for working web people.
