Dell crowdsources innovation
(The Social Web/ZDNet.com)
-
Last week, Dell launched 'IdeaStorm', a Digg-style customer feedback site which invites users to submit and vote on ways to improve the company's product line and service. That's rich: take the old "suggestion box," wrap a Web site around it and voila, we have a new buzzword to watch out for: crowdsource. Why pay employees to study your customers and develop innovative ideas when you can just ask those same customers directly, take their best ideas for free, and then turn around and sell it all back to them. Talk about closing the feedback loop. I just wish this wisdom of the crowds/user democracy notion would dry up and blow away, you digg? I can't help but think it will only lead to bland, whitewashed sameness-of-thought. All you can really get from a crowd, especially an unpaid crowd, is group-think and mob rule, not innovation, banality not originality. Good luck, Dell. I'm sure your "crowd" will tell you to stop making laptops that explode. Now that's innovative.
