MySpace sued for failure to protect against sexual predators
(AlterNet)
-
MySpace [is] being sued by a 14-year-old girl (and her mother) for $30 million in damages after the girl was sexually assaulted by a 19-year-old man she met on MySpace.First of all, I have to say that you knew this was coming, and it's probably just the trickle before the dam bursts. Too much money is being poured into this social networking space for it to be ignored. While I regret the young girl's ugly ordeal, I really have to wonder about a mother who allows her 14-year-old to go out on dates with 19-year-olds. We know that predators exist, but where are the parents who train their children to protect themselves? More interesting under the link I cribbed are the comments, things like "Face it: social networking is a silly habit with no redeeming value." And: "This cybercrap is sucking up the time and attention and intelligence of an entire generation." (Now we can't know for sure, but I'm sure someone said this same thing about TV, back in the 1940's and 50's.) Oh boy, get ready for the MySpace/social networking backlash, especially from those who would shutter the entire Internet, if they could, in order to protect our kids. Of course, with the gradual erosion of after-school programs, sports programs, vocational training, and arts programs, what exactly do we expect our kids to do with their spare time? Is it really a mystery why MySpace looms so large with the youngsters? Ask the girl's mother.
