Link and Think: 2002
-
AIDS. HIV. Little words. Big problems. Just to understate things. Perhaps no group has been devastated more by the so-called AIDS epidemic than people of African descent. And while I hope that we all hope that this problem will be solved, my greatest interest in this problem is to understand how and why it disproportionally destroys people who share my phenotype. The sources I've found today range from possibly crackpot theory to scholarly clinical trial. The wide and contentious range of opinion and fact suggest that the elusive threshold to a solution is not only scientific, but political, social, and economic. The cure will therefore remain elusive. So at this point, as thinking individuals, all we can do is arm ourselves with information.
"While African Americans account for an estimated 13 percent of the U.S. population, the CDC reports that 38 percent of all people diagnosed with AIDS through June 2001 in the United States are African Americans."

"Just as the bubonic plague upturned the social order in medieval Europe, AIDS will reshape Africa. Most children would rather stay at home than go to granny, criminal gangs or warlords. But without massive foreign aid, Africa cannot afford much in the way of drugs, food or nursing."

"If there is evidence that HIV causes AIDS, there should be scientific documents which either singly or collectively demonstrate that fact, at least with a high probability. There is no such document."

"At present the population of the world is increasing at about 58,000 per diem. War, so far, has had no very great effect on this increase, which continued throughout each of the world wars.. War has hitherto been disappointing in this respect.but perhaps bacteriological war may prove effective. If a Black Death could spread throughout the world once in every generation, survivors could procreate freely without making the world too full. The state of affairs might be unpleasant, but what of it?"

"AIDS is not a malediction, but the welcome and natural remedy to reduce the population on the planet.... Should human beings disappear, I surely wouldn't mind.... Just as the Black Plague ended the feudal era, so AIDS will end the industrial era of progress. This is a good thing, since industrial progress brings population growth."
