2002: The Year in Links
2002: The Year in Links
A blog is nothing without its links. Below, is a chronology of the 473 links I posted or cribbed in 2002. Down from an all-time high of 788 links in 2000, when blogging was young, and 589 links in 2001. Less linking, better sources, and yet there seems to be an awful lot of linkrot occuring. What's the deal? When something goes online it should stay there forever, or why bother posting it in the first place?
Oh yeah, I forgot that the Internet is being overrun by advertising and marketing, and this is obscuring the quality content that's out there, in a sea of pop-up ads and crappy, Flash-turbation sites for movies and bullsh*t products. All the more reason to believe that the next "big" thing will be personalized content, and easy-to-use software that goes out and finds the data that matches your personal information needs. I think the best early thinking on this subject in 2002 was in an online article by writer Anil Dash called, The Microcontent Client. Of course, no one has yet figured out how to make money on content, whether micro- or macro-, so innovation will have to come from people driven by ideas and not just cash for cash's sake. So the profiteers will just sit on their money until they find something and someone they can exploit for short-term gains that only benefit a select few. But that's another story.
I'm glad that this sad sack of a year is over. It was actually a pretty bleak year, all things considered. With another Bush-led war looming, and economic malaise in all corners, that downward trend will probably continue well into 2003, and perhaps much longer. Welcome to the new Dark Ages, but that, too, is yet another story.
