The Ottoman Empire and my California tax return?
(WikiPedia)
-
OK, so according to the story, "the Fall of the Ottoman Empire can be attributed to the failure of its economic structure; the size of the Empire created difficulties in economically integrating its diverse regions." (Does that sound familiar, by the way?) By the end of World War One, the empire essentially had been dissolved. This was an empire that spanned nearly 650 years, but was in decline for its last 250 years. In contrast, the American slave trade, which powered the economic engine that set the country on its course to superpower status, spanned about 400 years. Yet, today, when some wacky black people talk about slavery reparations, something that only ended, officially, less than 150 years ago, they're told: that was a long time ago, you're free, and you have a (half)black President now, so quit asking for handouts. But in 2009, there's a checkbox for the Ottoman Empire settlement payments - payments - on my California tax return. Ah, hypocrisy.
