Quitting FriendFeed
(rizzn's personal blog)
-
For those who've not been on FriendFeed, wanna know what it's like? It's like Slashdot, but without the critical thinking. It's like Digg, but with a better vocabulary. It's like 4chan, but without the criminal record. It's like the comments on LittleGreenFootballs during the Rathergate scandal, but without the research. Simply put, it's a bunch of really smart people who generally feel they're too smart to go out and back up what they have to say with facts.Wow, that's a trenchant overview of FriendFeed, a bit over-the-top and inaccurate from my experience, however. Personally, as someone who's been on the InterWeb since about 1994, I've seen it all. The thing I've grown most weary of are people who have to "announce" that they're quitting a service, or blogging, or contributing. Why not just pull the plug and be done with it? Why does anyone need the self-important explanations and parting shots? I just don't get it? While you may have contributed to the conversation at some point, that's all it is: a conversation. And in a world of six billion people, you're just one voice. Maybe in the 'real world' you're important, but in cyberspace, you're just one voice. Please, everyone, get over yourself.
