SoCal man charged with uploading Oscar screener onto Web
(Mercury News/AP)
-
A man was charged Thursday with copyright infringement for allegedly uploading the computer-animated film "Flushed Away" after getting a copy from an Oscar voter. Salvador Nunez Jr., 27, of Norwalk faces up to three years in prison if convicted of the felony count. He was scheduled to appear in court March 1.For uploading a b.s. movie that no one will remember three years from now, you can have the government cops in your house, searching your computer and threatening you with three years in jail? And you're saying we don't live in a society that, if it hasn't already crossed the line, is bordering on totalitarianism? Really? The movie this guy allegedly uploaded, Flushed Away, is an Oscar nominee and this is the first time I've ever heard about it. Maybe I'm not as much of a film buff as I thought I was. Moreover, our tax dollars will be spent in court, prosecuting a guy for a couple mouse-clicks. Meanwhile, real criminals walk around every day, with impunity, and I guess that as long as they don't upload a dumb flick to the Net, they can countinue to threaten us. Doesn't Hollywood have something better to do, like making quality movies that people want to see? In some U.S. cities, movies now cost $12 and up; can you blame anyone for seeking alternative ways to view content that, until you actually see it, could end up being a huge, steaming turd? Who hasn't had an experience at the movies where you left the theater feeling completely ripped-off and fleeced?
