Justice Rehnquist: an oxymoron
(Wikipedia)
-
Here's a resume that paints a real pretty picture, if you're a right-wing extremist bigot:
Chief Justice William Rehnquist will be remembered as a judge who...
- wrote memorandum supporting Plessy v. Ferguson. In Plessy the Court endorsed state supported segregation and established that Jim Crow "separate but equal" principle was constitutional
- wrote a proposed constitutional amendment designed to limit the enforcement of Brown v. Board of education
- wrote memorandum endorsing Texas' "Whites Only" Primaries
- fought passage of ordinance permitting blacks to enter stores and restaurants
- harassed minority voters in Arizona in the 1960s
- owned property containing restrictive covenants barring the sale of his property to nonwhites and Jews
- voted to grant Bob Jones University tax exempt status
With legal friends like these, who needs enemies? Those were just some of the highlights. He was a dissenting voice in Roe vs. Wade. He oversaw the kangaroo-like process and wrote the consenting opinion in the highly dubious Bush-Gore 2000 presidential election recount, paving the way for the incompetent kinder, gentler federal government that's ruining running the world country today. I always thought judges were supposed to be fair and impartial, but how can this guy be seen in that light when he used the law to bludgeon people looking for equal and dignified treatment under the law? His record suggests situational ethics run amok. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. It's really hard to make a case that this man made the world a better place while he was alive, but maybe now it is.
