Memo to All Pan-Asian or Asian Fusion or Asian-Infused Restaurants
(Pop Life blog)
-
First of all, just admit it: "Pan-Asian" is your way of charging exorbitant prices and exploiting naive white people who don't feel comfortable venturing into a restaurant run by actual Asian immigrants...You're destroying the ongoing struggle of Asian Americans to convince everybody else that we're not all the same. This post is funny and insightful at the same time. Who knew that food was such a cultural battleground? But when I think about it, I see that mainstream America's comfort with people of color rarely goes beyond two primary things: food or music. When I programmed alumni activities at Stanford, and discussions of so-called multicultural involvement came up, the first ideas that got floated always centered around food or music. I guess that all culled (pron. cull-udd) people do is eat and dance around. What's up with that?
