Four Kinds of Company Men

BoyCaught snagged the tail-end of a CNBC interview today. It was Tim Russert interviewing Jack Welch, the legendary CEO's CEO, the guy who shows all other business leaders how to lead. He said something pretty interesting, it was this notion that there are four kinds of managers.
The first kind are people who have values and who make the numbers. For them, the sky is the limit. Onward and upward.
The second kind are people who had values but didn't make the numbers. For them, Welch said, they should get a second chance, even a third chance.
The third kind are people who don't have values and don't make the numbers. They won't last very long and are usually gone before anyone even knows it.
The fourth kind present the biggest problems for any organization. They make the numbers, but they have no values. These kinds of people need to be taken out of the mix as soon as possible, because they are like a cancer. These folks may be described by the term jerk.
You've got to respect a CEO who would be willing to get rid of people who bring in profits. But then, I have to wonder, can I respect a guy who plays golf, an elitist sport, typically played by arrogant men in country clubs, who like to pontificate from the top of a pyramid scheme called Corporate America? (Sorry Tiger.) They seem to think that only their ideas are worthwhile, but their vantage point distorts their perspective. It's the kind of perspective that allows them to layoff people who need jobs by the tens of thousands, and still take their management bonuses without batting an eye. I guess Welch's values aren't my values.
